Funeral services for Noma Jean Cathey, age 85, of Oelrichs, SD will be at 2:00 PM on Friday, October 30, 2015 at the Prairie View United Methodist Church with committal to follow at the Hillside Cemetery in Oelrichs, SD.
A memorial has been established. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, PO Box 970, Chadron, NE69337.

Noma Jean passed away at her home in Chadron, NE on October 23, 2015. She was born April 7, 1930 in Woodward County, OK to Guy and Ethel Leachman, the youngest of five children. She grew up in the Richmond area, graduating from RichmondHigh School in 1948. After graduating from high school, she worked as a telephone operator in Woodward, OK. She married her high school sweetheart, Duane Cathey, on October 2, 1948 in Woodward. Into this union, three daughters were born.
Duane had been to South Dakota with a harvest crew for several years. On one of these trips, he was offered a job working for Vic Peterson on his farm southwest of Oelrichs. Returning to Oklahoma, Duane and Noma Jean loaded their few possessions and one-year-old daughter, Vicky, and moved to the Oelrichs area in August 1951.
Duane and Noma Jean eventually leased the Peterson place until their move to the Perry Moody ranch east of Ardmore, SD in 1966. In 1979, they built their own home southwest of Oelrichs, where they continued to farm and ranch. As a farm and ranch wife, there was always work to be done, and Noma Jean could be found helping Duane working and planting the fields, putting up hay, feeding the cattle, along with raising their three daughters.
Noma Jean enjoyed various sporting activities, both playing and watching. She was an avid bowler, bowling on league teams in Chadron and then Hot Springs for over 40 years. She played basketball and softball while in high school and shared this knowledge with her girls, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She and Duane could be found in the stands cheering at their grandsons’ football and basketball games and even got involved in their granddaughters’ soccer games when they visited them in California.
Noma Jean was a loving caregiver. She nurtured her girls through various childhood illnesses, often using home remedies passed down from her own mother. After Duane suffered a stroke in 2006, she was his attentive nursemaid.
Noma Jean and Duane moved to Prairie Pines Retirement Center in Chadron, NE on January 2, 2011. Noma Jean attended various activities offered there and made many new friends. Living in Chadron gave her the opportunity to attend her great-grandchildren’s various activities, which she thoroughly enjoyed.
Noma Jean was a member of Prairie View United Methodist Church. During her lifetime, she worked at the Oelrichs Post Office, the Oelrichs grain elevator, served on the election board for many years, and served on the Farm Service Agency Board.
Noma Jean is survived by daughters Vicky (Merle) Morford of Chadron, NE, Cindy (Ron) Trent of Oelrichs, SD, and Gayle (Paul) Amann of Lemon Grove, CA; grandchildren Corey (Sheila) Pourier, Tye (Nichole)Pourier, Justin (Melody) Trent, Devon (Kaylyn) Trent, John (Brenda) Morford, Jason (Ann) Morford, Dana (Matt) Ransom, Beth (Joe) Amann-Wagner, and Lisa Amann; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nephews, nieces and friends. She was preceded in death by husband Duane, three brothers, a sister, a stillborn daughter, a grandson and a great-grandson.
