Graveside services for Joy Shirley Reed, age 83, of Chadron, NE will be at 2:00 PM on Friday, December 4, 2015 at Greenwood Cemetery with Reverend Paul Smith officiating.

Joy passed away on Sunday, November 29, 2015 at her home in Chadron. She was born to Arthur and Mildred Elmitt in Hawarden, IA on October 12, 1932. She was the oldest of three children, followed by sister RoxyAnn and brother Gordon, who died as an infant. Her family moved to Chadron in 1941 when her dad went to work for Chicago Northwestern Railroad in the roundhouse.
Joy graduated from Chadron High in 1952. She married her high school sweetheart, Richard “Dick” Reed, on March 5, 1955 after he was discharged from the Army after serving in the Korean War. Two daughters were born to this union, Cynthia “Cindy” Dawn and Donna Sue. Her husband worked for the Nebraska Department of Roads for nearly 40 years. He passed away on October 1, 2003 after 48 years of marriage.
In Joy’s younger days, she worked at a confectionery and floral shop and also babysat. She was very artistic at a young age and still enjoyed drawing up to her final days.
She is left to mourn by daughters Donna and husband Michael
Toalson of Pearsall, TX; Cindy Peters and special friend Richard Mann
of rural Chadron, NE; grandson Josh Peters, wife Sara and
great-grandson Jayden Reed of Thornton, CO; granddaughter Brandi,
husband Brandon McKee, and great-grandson Branson of Denver, CO; brother-in-law Gerald Blonien of Hay Springs, NE; former son-in-law Steve Peters of Hay Springs; and sister-in-law Shirlee Schroeder (Larry) of Texas.
She was preceded in death by her brother, parents, husband and sister.
