Funeral services for Sylvester Michael Tobacco “Mato Wi Awanyan Glinajin,” age 59, will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at the Brother Rene Hall in Oglala, SD with Sister Connie Schmidt and Sister Barb officiating. Traditional Lakota services will be provided by Mike Catches and Peter Catches.
Burial will be at the Holy Rosary Mission Cemetery in Pine Ridge, SD.
A one-night wake service will begin at 2:30 PM on Friday, December 11, 2015 at the Brother Rene Hall in Oglala, SD. Rosary Services will start at 7:00 PM on Friday evening.
Sylvester was born on October 21, 1956 in Pine Ridge, SD to the late Leroy Stephen Tobacco and Carolyn Elouise (Catches) Tobacco. He passed away peacefully on December 5, 2015 in Pine Ridge, SD surrounded by love and his family.
Sylvester is survived by sons Willie Wounded of #4 Community, Ezra Tobacco of Oshkosh, NE, Cowboy Tobacco of Grand Island, NE, Michael Tobacco of Rapid City, SD, Corey Waters of Calico, SD, and Dallas Tobacco and Legend Tobacco of Pine Ridge, SD; daughters Misty Lakota of Washington D.C., Cara Wright of St. George, MD, and Essence Tobacco of Pine Ridge, SD; brothers Galen Holy Rock of Oglala, SD, Steven Tobacco of Rapid City, SD, and Edward Catches of Calico; sisters Sylvia Tobacco, Nola Saucedo-Tobacco, and Pebbles Tobacco of Tobacco Road, Dorothi Tobacco of Calico, Mary Tobacco of Pine Ridge, and Michelle Knife of Rapid City; grandchildren Alexis, Willie Jr., Riley, Latrell, and Alexia Wounded, Tristan Michael Markowski, Aidan and Cameron Tobacco, Adrien and Christian Tobacco, Sonja and Gabe Wright, Anjah Lamont, and Denmi and Iraeshiyah Whiteman; and special nieces and nephews Devonna Vitalis, Deb Tobacco, Dawn Tobacco-Frank, and Jessica Pettigrew of Pine Ridge, Kelly Landrum of Cheyenne, WY, Evans Youngman Jr. of Oglala, SD, and Jody Bird Head of Alaska.
Sylvester was preceded in death by parents Leroy and Carolyn Tobacco; spouse Angelina (Red Cloud) Tobacco; son Dusty Tobacco; daughter Ezralda Tobacco; brothers Floyd Tobacco, Darrell Tobacco, and Dale Catches Sr.; and sister Stephanie Tobacco-Sitting Holy.
Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge, SD is in charge of arrangements for Sylvester Michael Tobacco “Mato Wi Awanyan Glinajin.”
