02/19/2016 - Melvin Bruns

Funeral services for Melvin Bruns, age 75, of rural Chadron, NE will be at 2:00 PM on Friday, February 19, 2016 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, 702 E. 9th St. in Chadron, NE with Pastor Peter Bertram officiating.
 
Respecting Melvin’s wishes, cremation has taken place and inurnment will follow at a later date.
 
A memorial has been established for Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, the Chadron Rescue Unit or the Crawford Volunteer Fire Department. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, PO Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337.

Melvin passed away on February 15, 2016 at Chadron Community Hospital. He was born November 6, 1940 in Crawford, NE to Martin and Ester (Wohlers) Bruns. Melvin attended District 53 through 8th grade and graduated from ChadronHigh School in 1960. He later attended the Denver Automotive Institute for auto mechanics.
 
On June 5, 1965 he married Sheryl Jones in Chadron. They lived in Commerce City, CO until 1972, when they moved to Crawford to run the Mobil Bulk Truck. In 1975, Melvin returned to the farm where he was raised on the Table and continued farming until his death.
 
Melvin enjoyed hunting and fishing and started raising pheasants for the State of Nebraska in the late 1980s. He established the Table Top Hunting Preserve in 1995 so hunters could enjoy an old-fashioned hunting experience. He made hundreds of new friends from coast to coast and from Alaska to Texas.
Melvin was a conservationist at heart. In 1997, he received the Conservation Award for Recognition of Wildlife Habitat for planting over 10,000 trees through the years. In 2000, he received the Friend of the Ridge Award from the Governor’s Wild Turkey Hunt. In 2014, he was inducted into the Dawes County Ag Hall of Fame. 
 
Survivors include wife Sheryl; sons Jay (Erica) and Jeff of rural Chadron; grandson Luke; brother Bob (Judy) Bruns of Torrington, WY; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
 
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents.
