02/29/2016 - Vera Bridges Roberts
Vera Bridges Roberts passed away in Youngtown, AZ on February 8, 2016, just 10 days short of her 98th birthday. She was born February 18, 1918 near Toppenish, WA. Vera was one of 11 children and lived in the Yakima Valley in Washington for 90 years. The last eight years of her life she lived in Peoria and Youngtown, AZ.
Vera married Cecil Roberts in 1935. They raised four children and had 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandsons.
Among her 37 immediate survivors are daughter Jeri (Marvin) Neuharth of Chadron, NE; grandchildren Jodi (Jeff) Lias of Chadron, NE and Janet (Jim) Donovan of Geneva, NE; great-grandchildren Michael Straub of Gillette, WY, Bill Donovan of York, NE, Alexandria Donovan of Wilmington, NC, and Lance Donovan of Lincoln, NE; and great-great-grandsons Tegan Straub of Hemingford, NE and Boston Donovan Zeleny of Geneva, NE; and brothers Bill, Tommy, and Jerry Bridges, all of Yakima, WA.
Vera was preceded in death by parents Thomas and Vera Bridges; husband Cecil; daughter Helen Frank; granddaughter Cindy Neuharth; three brothers, and four sisters.
Vera was an accomplished, hard working woman, receiving her GED and Licensed Practical Nursing certification after her children were grown. She loved hunting, fishing, and gardening, as well as being a self-taught carpenter, seamstress, and car mechanic. She taught her children to sew, do needlework, cook, and can garden produce. She could remodel a home, build an addition to the family dwelling and assist her son with car repair. When the girls in the neighborhood had a sewing project to complete, Vera was the go-to person when they ran into problems. Vera custom made prom and bridesmaid dresses and school clothes for her girls and others. She made many quilts, some of which were donated to a charity for the homeless population. Her many talents will be missed.
Vera requested her body be donated to Science Care, and there were no services.
