Funeral services for Melissa Pearl Shields, age 44, will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at the Oglala Recreation Center in Oglala, SD with Marsha BonFleur officiating.

 

Burial will be at Our Lady of the Sioux Catholic Cemetery in Oglala, SD.

 

A one-night wake service will begin at 9:00 AM on Friday, February 26, 2016 at the Oglala Recreation Center in Oglala, SD.

 

Melissa was born on June 7, 1971 in Pine Ridge, SD to Limon Bad Yellow Hair and Philomene Slow Bear. Melissa passed away on February 20, 2016 at the Pine Ridge IHS in Pine Ridge, SD.

 

Melissa is survived by father Limon Bad Yellow Hair of Pine Ridge, SD; husband Edward Shields Sr. of Pine Ridge, SD; sons Tyler Slow Bear of Minneapolis, MN and Edward Shields, Samuel Hand, Daniel Hand and Edwin Shields, all of Pine Ridge, SD; daughters Hazel Shields and Marissa Shields of Pine Ridge, SD; sisters Vesta Packed of Oglala, SD, Annie Packed AKA Jesse Rodriguez of Denver, CO, Linda Thunder Hawk of Idaho, Louis Pomplum and Sheree Packed of Wisconsin, and Irma Last Horse of Wakpamni Lake, SD; brother Lester Thunder Hawk of Sioux Falls, SD; and two grandchildren.

 

Melissa was preceded in death by mother Philomene Slow Bear; grandfather Andrew Slow Bear Sr.; grandmother Mary Slow Bear; brothers Trudell Slow Bear and John Slow Bear; sisters Mary Sue and Annette Slow Bear; and nephew Jonathan Slow Bear.
