Funeral services for Hazel Edna (Reid) Bell of Crawford, NE will be at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at the Harrison Bible Church with Pastor Matt Parker officiating.
Burial will be at the Harrison Cemetery.
Hazel passed away on May 4, 2016 at the Ponderosa Villa in Crawford, NE. She was born on June 7, 1921 to Bessie (Russell) and Rollie Joseph Reid at home on the Reid Homestead northeast of Minatare, NE.
She grew up there learning to love the various farm animals (cats, dogs, cattle, horses, sheep, chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, etc.)
Her father got her a small Shetland pony colt when she was 5 or 6 years old. In her later years, Hazel felt her father was disappointed that she didn’t love the pony (Boots) more and spend more time riding him because he loved horses so much. He liked to work with them, training them to be ridden and working as a team. She did ride Boots to get the milk cows in and at times to school. Her sisters Zelma and Nellie spent more time with him and rode him more.
Hazel liked to work with her mom, raising a big garden each summer and harvesting and using the produce.
Most summers brought the hatching baby chicks and sometimes turkeys and ducks and geese.
Hazel started going to school when she was six years old. She went to “Hope,” a two-room country school a mile and a half west of her home. For many years, the lower grade room taught first through fourth grades and the other room taught fifth through eighth. It was a two-teacher school.
In 1934, Hazel’s parents decided to move. They rented the Segebartt place from Aunt Clara (Segebartt) Russell who was living in Scottsbluff, NE. This move caused Hazel, Zelma, and Nellie to change schools. They began going to Nine Mile School, another country school. They lived there about a year.
Hazel attended this school until she graduated eighth grade. The graduation ceremony was held in Gering, NE.
Hazel attended three different high schools. She went two years at Nine Mile, one year at Minatare, and her last year at Shelton Academy in Shelton, NE. She then went to Scottsbluff Junior College for two years and got her teaching certificate. She taught in many country schools during her teaching years. She taught in Scottsbluff and Banner counties and later in Sioux and Dawes Counties.
About 1935, Rollie and Bessie had a chance to buy a place two miles away from the Segebartt place. The buildings that were there were in good shape. The family moved there and that is where they lived until the three girls got married and moved away. Rollie and Bessie continued to live there until Bessie passed away on July 5, 1966.
Sisters Hazel and Nellie met two brothers, Roy and Loren Bell. The two sisters married the two brothers in a double wedding on April 15, 1948. Nellie married Roy, and Hazel married Loren. They were married in a small country Seventh-day Adventist church about 15 miles east of Scottsbluff, NE.
Hazel and Loren made their home in the Crawford, NE area and remained in the area for the rest of their lives. Son Maurice was born at home in Crawford and son Mikel was born at home while the family was living on the Bell ranch west of Crawford.
Hazel worked all her life, doing many different jobs. She worked in the laundry, doing dry cleaning, ironing, and whatever a laundry does. She worked in the bakery, taught school, and in later years worked at the Ponderosa Villa Nursing Home. She worked in the laundry and as an aide on the floor.
She loved her grandchildren Mikel Andrew (Teah) Bell, Cary (Jim) Dunemann, Curtis Bell, and Pat (Tobie) Copp and great grandchildren Gabriella, Noah, and Jocelyn Dunemann.
