Funeral services for Steven “Spook” Heiting of Hay Springs, NE will be at 10:00 AM on Thursday, June 16, 2016 at the Hay Springs High School Auditorium with Reverend Al Trucano officiating. The family requests that individuals dress casually for the service by wearing their favorite Husker shirt.
Committal services will be conducted by Father Joseph Joseph at the Hay Springs City Cemetery.
Visitation will be at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at the United Methodist Church in Hay Springs.
A memorial has been established for the Sons of the American Legion or donor’s choice. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, PO Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337.
Steve passed away suddenly on Friday, June 10, 2016. He was born on June 16, 1957 on Father’s Day. He joked that he was the best gift that dad ever got.
Steve attended Sandridge Country School through 8th grade and graduated 3rd in his class from Hay Springs High School in 1975. During his high school years, he participated in football, basketball, countless extracurricular activities, and also Scholastic Day at Chadron State College.
After a brief stint at Chadron State College, Steve did what he always wanted to do, farm on the family farm south of Hay Springs. He continued doing that until his death.
Steve was a proud member of the Sons of the American Legion and always enjoyed the opportunity to converse and joke with fellow legionnaires. He was also a member of the Highway 20 Tractor Club and an active member of countless community events.
Steve especially enjoyed spending time with his children, his grandchildren, and the love of his life Barb Young. Steve wasn’t afraid of hard work, and he was always willing to help others. In addition to hard work, he enjoyed playing cards and sharing a morning cup of coffee with his mom. He was always a happy guy when he was surrounded by family and friends.
Steve is survived by mother Joan Heiting; fiancé Barb Young; daughters Melissa (Colter) Reffalt, Tonya (Jeff) Guerreo and Christopher (Shae) Heiting; sisters Shawn (Cy) Hartman and Tori (Troy) Skeen; brother Pat Heiting; sister-in-law Lori McLaren; grandchildren Jaycek and baby Reffalt, Izzabella, JJ, Sky, and TayLee; and an abundance of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Steve was preceded in death by dad Bubs and brothers Mike and Tim.
