Funeral services for Kylen Tyrone Shangreaux, age 2 years, will be at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pine Ridge, SD with Father Joe Daoust, S.J., officiating. Traditional Lakota services will be provided by Mike Catches.
Burial will be at the Catches Family Cemetery in the Calico Community, Pine Ridge, SD.
A one-night wake service will begin at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pine Ridge, SD.
Kylen was born on November 19, 2013 in Rapid City, SD to James Shangreaux and Katrina White Whirlwind. He made his journey across the Milky Way to the Spirit World on July 28, 2016 in Evergreen, SD.
Kylen came to us a pure soul. Every encounter with him was an opportunity to see how amazing he truly was. He had a feisty personality that literally touched the hearts of all he came into contact with. Kylen’s life was a sacred gift to us as his family and to the future of his nation, the Oglala Lakota. He was a gift as well. During the time of his young precious life he was loved and cared for by many; his maternal grandmother, Gloria No Neck, and her family had the honor of loving and nurturing Kylen. Kylen was also loved and nurtured by his paternal aunt Angie Shangreaux, who he called “Mama,” his “Daddy,” Ben Catches, brothers Richie Catches, Benji Catches, and Troy Catches and Auntie Desiree Catches. Kylen’s life was vibrant with so much love to give. His innocence and love will be felt for a lifetime, and his loss will be felt so deeply by many. Kylen shared a very special bond with his “Papa Rick” and “Bama” Patti Shangreaux.
Kylen is survived by parents James Shangreaux of Pine Ridge, SD and Katrina White Whirlwind of Porcupine, SD; brothers Gage Shangreaux of Hermosa, SD, Tayten, Dominic and Xavier Stands of Redshirt, SD, Richard, Benjamin and Troy Catches of Pine Ridge, SD, and Shane Killsback and Daryl No Neck Jr. of Porcupine, SD; sisters Mercedes Shangreaux of Hermosa, SD, Patricia Shangreaux of Pine Ridge, SD, Jacie Catches of Manderson, SD and Daryllynn No Neck of Porcupine, SD; paternal grandparents Rick and Patti Shangreaux of Pine Ridge, SD; maternal grandparents Sonya DuBray of Porcupine, SD, Sonny Richards of Pine Ridge, SD, Daryl No Neck Sr. of Porcupine, SD and (Mother) Gloria No Neck of Porcupine, SD.
Kylen was preceded in death by brother James Lawrence Shangreaux II.
