Don was born on October 5, 1936, the 4th child of Roy L. and Ruth E. (Thornton) Garner, in Crawford, NE. He lived his entire life in Crawford with the exception of the three years he was in the Military. He passed away on August 16, 2016 at his home in Crawford after a hard-fought battle with cancer.
He attended Crawford Elementary and Crawford High School. He was a Boy Scout in his youth. In later life he assisted with campouts and canoe races with his boys. He enlisted in the army in March 1955 and served at Fort Knox, KY, Fort Riley, KS, and at the Army base near Kitzingen, Germany. Upon his honorable discharge in March 1958, he went to work for Chicoine Brothers Ford in Crawford as a mechanic. In June 1959, he went to work for the Nebraska Department of Roads and worked there for nearly 38 years before retiring in December 1996. He plowed many a mile of snow. He married his lifelong partner, Lola Soester, on May 9, 1960 in Chadron, NE. To this union, three sons were born, Max, Bret, and Dennis.
When the boys were young, he taught them how to fish and hunt. They spent many, many Sundays at some lake in the area. He didn’t hunt much, but loved guns. He did 99% of the mechanic and maintenance work on the family’s vehicles. He also taught the boys how to keep their “junkers” running. He attended and enjoyed most all of the boys’ school activities and sporting events. He actually enjoyed mowing the grass and shoveling the snow. He raised a lot of garden also. He planted, watered, and weeded it and Lola had to pick and cook or preserve it.
He is survived by wife of 56 years Lola; sons Max and wife Nancy of Guernsey, WY, Bret and wife Kathy of Council Bluffs, IA, and Dennis and friend Nancy of Alliance, NE; granddaughter Jennifer and husband Rob Lopez of Chadron, NE; grandsons Nathan and wife Candace of Sheridan, WY and Kyle, Dylan, Jared, and Nick of Council Bluffs, IA; great-grandson Lucas Lopez of Chadron, NE; brothers Jack and wife Patricia Garner of Lusk, WY and Roy Garner of Blair, NE; sister Patty and husband Melvin Jones of Crawford, NE; in-laws Dwain Soester of Chadron, NE, Russell and Wilma Hack of Marsland, NE, Dale and Hazel Reinmuth of Salmon, ID, Ronald Soester of Harrison, NE, and Jim and Carol Stolldorf of Crawford, NE; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by parents Roy and Ruth Garner; sisters Bobbie and husband Hank Gentrup and Leola Reynoldson; in-laws Bob and Ruby Soester, Edda Mae Soester and Vicki Garner; and granddaughter Kayla Lynn.
