Theresa passed away on August 20, 2016 in Rapid City, SD. On a beautiful August morning, as the sun was beginning to rise, she left this world, entering into God’s Kingdom. Although she will forever be missed, it was comforting to know that she was greeted with open arms by those who had gone before her.
Theresa was born to Hermus and Edith (Martin) Merrival on March 18, 1944. Mom shared many stories about growing up on the family homestead north of Pine Ridge, which she called home until her death. She loved her family and would speak fondly about living next to her grandparents, Alec and Susie (Woods) Merrival. She was the sixth child of Hermus and Edith’s seven children: Doris Jean, Donroy, Greta Mae, Lema, Ila, and Bonita.
She received her education at Holy Rosary Mission (HRM). Although boarding school days were tough, she loved sharing her memories about her Holy Rosary Mission days; which were too numerous to count. She graduated from HRM in May 1962.
Theresa married her best friend, Edward, on August 16, 1980 and the two have been inseparable. She spent her life raising her children while balancing a career at the Bureau of Indian Affairs until her retirement. She had made many lifelong friends throughout her working career, many whom she kept close to her heart and would proudly consider family.
She will be greatly missed by husband Ed; daughters Jody Twiss, Julie (Roger) Yellow Cloud, Jeannie Cuny, and Thetna (Beans) Weston, son James (Melarie) Schuh; grandchildren Quent Jr. and Jojo Bourne, Cody and Jesse Ferguson, Catlin, Kyle, and Alaina Clifford, Josh and Riley Yellow Cloud, Michael, Marlee, and MeKyla “Lala” Kelly, Kristin (Greg) Weston Campbell, and Toree, Jeila, T’Rese, and Jamesson Schuh; great-grandchildren Quent III and Carson Bourne, Tya and Mia Bourne, Payson and Keegan Sierra, and Gatlin Brunsch; siblings Donroy Merrival of Muscatine, IA, Lema Merrival of Los Angeles, CA, Ila (Lloyd) Twiss, and Alyce Pourier of Pine Ridge, SD; special daughters Suzette Brown and Lynn Pourier; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends that she shared a special bond with and loved very much.
She was preceded in death by parents Hermus and Edith Merrival; sisters Doris Jean Clifford, Greta Mae Brown, and Bonita Merrival; granddaughter Rhea Twiss; nephews Charlie and Raymond Merrill, Darrell Brown, and Terry and Ronnie Clifford; and very close friends Pete and Annabelle Swift Bird.
Those who knew Theresa well knew that she loved with her whole heart, her loyalty had no boundaries, and her kindness was overflowing. They knew she was honest, but very compassionate. We are all so blessed to have had such a strong Lakota woman in our lives.
Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge, SD is in charge of arrangements for Theresa Faye (Merrival) Schuh.
