Funeral services for Richard Afraid of Bear, age 83, will be at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, September 7, 2016 at the Afraid of Bear Residence in Slim Buttes, SD. Traditional Lakota services will be provided by Dave American Horse.
Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Slim Buttes, SD.
A two-night wake service will begin with the first night starting at 10:00 AM on Monday, September 5, 2016 at the Re-Creation Center in Oglala, SD. The second night will be on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at the Afraid of Bear Residence in Slim Buttes, SD.
Richard was born on August 9, 1933 in Pine Ridge, SD to George Afraid of Bear Sr. and Annie K. Afraid of Bear. He was a fancy dancer and was an original Slim Buttes Singer from the 1960s to the 1980s. He passed away on August 29, 2016 in Yankton, SD.
Richard is survived by brothers Fred Afraid of Bear Sr. and George Afraid of Bear Jr. of Slim Buttes, SD; sisters Rose Afraid of Bear-Becenti of Slim Buttes, SD and Ester Afraid of Bear of Fort Hall, ID; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Richard was preceded in death by father George Afraid of Bear Sr.; mother Annie K. Afraid of Bear; and brothers Ernest Afraid of Bear, Joseph Afraid of Bear; Steven Afraid of Bear; Francis Afraid of Bear, and Bob Afraid of Bear.
Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge, SD is in charge of arrangements for Richard Afraid of Bear.
