Funeral services for Darrell Thomas Spotted Elk Sr., age 61, will be at 1:00 PM on Thursday, September 15, 2016 at the Billy Mills Hall in Pine Ridge, SD with Charles McGaa officiating. Traditional Lakota services will be provided by Floyd Hand.
Burial will be at Holy Rosary Catholic Mission Cemetery in Pine Ridge, SD.
A one-night wake service starting at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at the Billy Mills Hall in Pine Ridge, SD.
Darrell was born on June 23, 1955 in Pine Ridge, SD to Reuben James Spotted Elk and Edna (Grabbing Bear) Apple. He made his journey to the Spirit World on September 11, 2016 at the Pine Ridge I.H.S. Hospital in Pine Ridge, SD.
Darrell is survived by children Darrell W. Spotted Elk Jr., Francis Spotted Elk, Alexis Spotted Elk, Stephanie Cottier, Kenneth Cottier, and George Richard, all of Pine Ridge, SD; siblings Theresa (John F. Caldwell) Waters of Pine Ridge, SD, Juliana (Floriberto) Parra-Munoz of North Platte, NE, Robert James Red Shirt of Pine Ridge, SD, Jerry Bear Shield of Rapid City, SD, Darrell Blue Bird of Pine Ridge, SD, and Myra Spotted Elk of Fort Washakie, WY; grandchildren Kiarra Buckman, Kitkat Cottier, Tommy Red Feather, Jovan and Darren Spotted Elk, and Shawna Thornton; great-grandchildren Cameron Buckman and unborn Regina Bear Spottted Elk; nieces Beleeya and Esrah Parra-Munoz, Canelo Santiago Parra-Munoz, Bobbi C. Spotted Elk, JoAnn Grass, Roberta, Jessica, and Rebecca Red Shirt, and Aaliyah Spotted Elk; nephews Peyon and Wyatt Caldwell, Robert Red Shirt Jr., Tom and Terry Red Feather, TJ Elk Boy, Issac Caldwell, and Cyrus Behan; wife Kathryn Cottier of Pine Ridge, SD; and special friend Renee Janis of Pine Ridge, SD.
Darrell was preceded in death by grandparents Robert B. Blue Bird-Grabbing Bear and Julia Hornbeck; mother Edna Blue Bird-Grabbing Bear; father Reuben Spotted Elk; aunts Dorothy American Horse, Emily King, Regina Grabbing Bear, and Theresa, Myrtle Kathryn, and Agatha Bell Blue Bird; uncles Howard and Bryan Blue Bird; sister Bernice Spotted Elk; brothers Collin Spotted Elk Sr. and Antoine (Schultz) Blue Bird; nephews Reuben Spotted Elk, Robert John Bear Shield, Floriberto Parra-Munoz Jr., and Ruben Fernandez; niece Juanita Broken Leg; best friends Sonny “Hound” Patton, Philip “Flop” Elk Boy, William “Charge” Charging, Wayne Hand, and Ronnie Richard; and favorite dogs Oscar, Wino, Mick, and Chino.
