Funeral services for Eugenia Mary Witt-Bettelyoun “Latunka Winyan,” age 86, will be at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at the Crazy Horse School in Wanblee, SD with Father Rick Abert, S.J., officiating. Traditional Lakota services will be provided by Richard Moves Camp.
Burial will be at St. Ignatius Catholic Cemetery in Wanblee, SD.
A two-night wake service will begin at 1:00 PM on Sunday, September 18, 2016 at CrazyHorseSchool in Wanblee, SD.
Rosary services will be at 7:00 PM on Monday, September 19, 2016 at the CrazyHorseSchool.
Pallbearers will be Alvin Bettelyoun Jr., Ed Bettelyoun Jr., Vern Standing Soldier Jr., Brice Long Soldier, William Bettelyoun, Chad Bettelyoun, Brandon Bettelyoun, Daniel Bettelyoun, Cody Whiting, and Rossie Bettelyoun.
Eugenia was born on October 4, 1929 in Wanblee, SD to Nathaniel Witt Sr. and Minnie Distribution-Witt. She passed into the Spirit World on September 15, 2016 at Rapid City Regional Hospital, surrounded by family.
Eugenia grew up in Wanblee, SD with her many siblings. She attended boarding school at Red Cloud. She married Rossie A. Bettelyoun and moved to Eagle Nest Butte, Long Valley, SD where Bettelyoun Ranch was located to raise their family. They later moved back to Wanblee, SD to live with her family. Throughout the years, she traveled to many places around the area. She loved collecting arts and crafts, reading books, beading, and sewing. She loved her family and friends, collecting pictures of family and friends.
Eugenia is survived by siblings Lawrence D. Witt, Lyle J. Witt and Becki A. Benton, all of Hot Springs, SD, Sandra E. Witt of Salem, OR, and Jerome W. Witt of Batesland, SD; children Alvin Gene Bettelyoun Sr. of Minneapolis, MN, Edward Dean Bettelyoun Sr. of Long Valley, SD, Ross Ernest Bettelyoun of Hisle, SD, Tina Lee Bettelyoun-Standing Soldier, Brenda Lou Bettelyoun, Lawrence Dewey Bettelyoun and Lois June Bettelyoun, all of Wanblee, SD, Clifford Louie Bettelyoun of Belvediere, SD, Albert Edwin Bettelyoun of Mission, SD, Timothy Swallow of Boston, MA, and Harley Bettelyoun of Prescott, AZ.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many relatives.
Eugenia was preceded in death by parents Minnie Distribution and Nathaniel Witt Sr.; husband Ross A. Bettelyoun; brothers Nathaniel Jr., Sidney, Nelson, Patrick and Albert Witt; son George W. Bettelyoun; grandchildren Autumn R., Trenton, Marty A., Mary J., and Jason H. Bettelyoun, Kalonnie Randall, and Nathaniel Standing Soldier; and several great-grandchildren.
Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge, SD is in charge of arrangements for Eugenia Mary Witt-Bettelyoun “Latunka Winyan.”
