Funeral services for Alice Merle (Two Bulls) Young, age 82, will be at 2:00 PM on Friday, September 23, 2016 at the Red Shirt Table School New Gymnasium in Red Shirt Table, SD with Pastor Joseph Story and Reverend Robert Two Bulls officiating.
Burial will be at the Seventh-day Adventist Cemetery in Red Shirt Table, SD.
A two-night wake service will begin with the first night at 12:00 PM on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at the LaCreek CAP Office in Martin, SD. The second night will start at 12:30 PM on Thursday, September 22, 2016 at the Red Shirt Table School New Gymnasium in Red Shirt Table.
Alice was born to Stearn and Jennie (Marshall) Two Bulls in Pine Ridge, SD on December 29, 1933. She made her journey to the Spirit World on September 16, 2016 at the BennettCountyHospital in Martin, SD.
Alice was raised at Red Shirt Table until the death of her father in February 1954. She and her cousin Margaret Swallow-Dyer then attended MadisonCollege in Madison, TN. After graduating from the Medical Records Department at MadisonCollege, Alice Merle went on relocation to Los Angeles, CA where she worked at WhiteMemorialHospital. She returned to South Dakota in 1958 to help her mother recuperate from an illness. Alice lived in Martin, SD at the time and worked for Wendell and Mary Long at the Bennett County Booster off and on for 30 years. She also worked for the Oglala Sioux Tribe on the A.N.A. Program and with the Oglala Sioux Housing Authority. She also worked for OglalaLakotaCollege as a student counselor. When she left the job as a counselor, she returned several years later and taught Lakota Language 1 and 2 for several years.
When Alice retired from teaching, she joined the Foster Grandparents Program. She worked for several years as a Foster Grandparent until ill health forced her to retire. She lived the rest of her life in Sunrise Housing, watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow.
Alice is survived by sons Lester “JD” (JoAnn) Fly and Russel W. (Tanya) Fly; daughters Jennie “Muffet” Fly, Sandra “Sandy” Fly, and Frances “Frankie” James; adopted son Peter (Pam) Golden-Two Bulls of England; stepdaughters Lois Glison and Sadie Young; 25 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; adopted grandchild Mato Golden-Two Bulls; 21 step-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandchild.
Alice was preceded in death by parents Stearn and Jennie (Marshall) Two Bulls; son Steven E. Fly Sr; stepsons Phillip Fly and Joseph “Joe” Young; 9 siblings; and one great-granddaughter.
Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge, SD is in charge of arrangements for Alice Merle (Two Bulls) Young.
