Ellsworth passed away on October 10, 2016 at Crestview Care Center in Chadron, NE. He was born March 1, 1936 in Des Moines, IA to Wallace and Kathryn Shaffer.

As a young teen, he became interested in amateur radio and elected to attend a technical high school that offered training in radio and electronics.

In first semester of high school, he was downed by polio, which left him with a slight walk impediment. He returned to classes in the second semester and graduated with his class in June 1954.

Then he was off to Iowa State College in Ames and the engineering curriculum. After two years, he chose to be a radio station engineer at the college station, WOI. He worked there until injured in an accident. After recuperating, he decided to go west where he found employment in a small-town radio station as a DJ/engineer. Later, he gravitated further west to Grand Junction, CO where he worked for several years before becoming a microwave technician.

This work and the hours were grueling. He was stationed in Central South Dakota and also Chadron. He retired at the age of 65.

He is survived by sister Andrea Pearson and nephew Dave Ramus.

Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements for Ellsworth Shaffer.
