10/20/2016 - Joseph Henry Black Elk

Funeral services for Joseph Henry Black Elk, age 75, will be 1:00 PM on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at the Billy Mills Hall in Pine Ridge, SD with Reverend Abraham Tobacco and Pastor Elton Yellow Boy officiating. Traditional Lakota services will be provided by Violet Catches.
 
Burial will be at the Mediator Episcopal Church Cemetery in Kyle, SD.
 
A two-night wake service will begin at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at the Billy Mills Hall in Pine Ridge, SD.
 
There will be a dinner and a give-away before the funeral service on Thursday, October 20, 2016.
 
Joseph was a veteran in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was born on February 15, 1941 in Hot Springs, SD to Henry Black Elk Jr. and Zoey (Morissette) Black Elk. Joseph made his journey to the Spirit World on October 13, 2016 at his home in Rapid City, SD. 
 
Joseph is survived by children Greg Black Elk, Tony Adams and Michelle Black Elk-Catches of Rapid City, SD and Theresa Black Elk of Oklahoma City, OK; sisters Faye Black Elk-Pulliam of Pine Ridge, SD and Debbie Black Elk-Charge on Him of Rapid City, SD; cousins Ivis and Iva Black Elk of Pine Ridge, SD; grandchildren Brandon Leil of Denver, CO, Nyeedra and Nakota Black Elk-Noel of Oklahoma City, OK, ShaTori Black Elk, Cassandra Black Elk, TeriLynn Black Elk-Jewett, Precious Black Elk, Manueleta Black Elk-Jewett, TJay Sullivan, Louis Sullivan, and Mahpiya Catches, all of Rapid City, SD, and Rhianna Adams of Kearney, NE; great-grandchildren Eniyah Leil of Denver, CO and Michael Rainbow III and DeLeyza Twiss of Rapid City, SD; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
 
Joseph was preceded in death by parents Henry Black Elk Jr. and Zoey (Morissette) Black Elk; wife Pearl (Adams) Black Elk; brothers Reginald Black Elk and Dwight “Ham” Black Elk; sister Henrietta Black Elk; uncles Wilson Black Elk Sr. and Luke Black Elk Sr.; and granddaughter Angel Jewett.
 
Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge, SD is in charge of arrangements for Joseph Henry Black Elk.
