Funeral services for Marie Nellie Pawnee Leggins “Tehlia Pi Win” (Treasured Woman), age 66, will be at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at the Mother Butler Center in Rapid City, SD with Jerome Kills Small officiating.
Burial will be at 11:30 AM on Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at the Mountain ViewCemetery in Rapid City, SD.
A one-night wake service will begin at 2:00 PM on Monday, November 7, 2016 at the MotherButlerCenter in Rapid City, SD.
A memorial has been established for the ALS Association, the organization dedicated to fighting Lou Gehrigs Disease. Donations may be made by calling 888-949-2577 or visiting www.alsa.org.
Marie was born on November 29, 1949 in Porcupine, SD to David Pawnee Leggins and Lavina Red Star. She made her journey to the Spirit World on October 31, 2016 at the Golden Living Center Meadow Brook in Rapid City, SD.
Marie was a loving person; she treated everyone in her life like they were family to her. Family was very important to her; she kept pictures of all of her family on display at her home, especially her grandchildren. Marie found love and enjoyment in the many things she did during her time here with us; she was an avid bead worker and jewelry maker and during the summer months if you were unable to reach her inside, she was most definitely out in her vegetable garden or planting beautiful flowers in her yard. Marie also enjoyed listening to KILI radio and watching western movies.
Marie was a very independent and strong woman; she was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. During her lifetime, she survived many obstacles that she experienced and was a true matriarch to her family. They could have not asked for a better mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends.
Marie is survived by her sons Austin Raymond Black Elk of Moose Lake, MN, Dwight Wayne Pawnee Leggins of Box Elder, SD, and Franklin Duane LaMont of Porcupine, SD; daughter Colette Mary Black Elk of Rapid City, SD; brothers Zack Pawnee Leggins of Belle Fourche, SD and Jerome Kills Small of Vermillion, SD; half brothers Wilson Pawnee Leggins and Paul Pawnee Leggins of Manderson, SD; ex-husband Gregory Wagner of Rapid City, SD; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and step-grandchildren.
Marie was preceded in death by parents David Pawnee Leggins and Lavina Red Star; grandmother Nellie Red Star, who raised her; sisters Delphine Pawnee Leggins, Thelma Pawnee Leggins, and Carmelita Pawnee Leggins, brother Raymond Pawnee Leggins; and half sisters Sarah Pawnee Leggins and Sandra Pawnee Leggins.
Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge, SD is in charge of arrangements for Marie Nellie Pawnee Leggins “Tehlia Pi Win” (Treasured Woman).
