Funeral services for Joseph Harry Bettelyoun “Wahancanka” ~Shield, age 72, will be at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at the Lakota Chapel in Martin, SD with Pastor John Poe and Reverend John Bush Sr. officiating. Traditional Lakota services will be provided by Steve DuBray.
Burial will be at Grace Cemetery in Martin, SD.
A two-night wake service will begin at 2:00 PM on Sunday, November 6, 2016 at the Martin (Lacreek) CAP Office in Martin, SD.
Joseph was born on November 17, 1943 in Pine Ridge, SD to Everett and Emma (Ruff) Bettelyoun. He made his journey to the Spirit World on November 3, 2016 at Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, SD.
Joseph is survived by wife Jeanette (Marshall) Bettelyoun of Martin, SD; sons Hermus Bettelyoun and Patrick Cottier of Martin, SD and Beau Cuevas of Pine Ridge, SD; daughters Maria Wilson of Allen, SD, Stacy Little Thunder and Kimberly and Elizabeth Bettelyoun, all of Martin, SD, and Joni and Twylita Bettelyoun of Rapid City, SD; sisters Winona Cottier, Mary Fern Bettelyoun and Darla Bettelyoun, all of Martin, SD; hunka brother Robert Running Bear of Pine Ridge, SD; 20 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren
Joseph was preceded in death by parents Everett C. Bettelyoun and Emma (Ruff) Bettelyoun and siblings Julie, Richard, Irene and Charles Bettelyoun.
Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge, SD is in charge of arrangements for Joseph Harry Bettelyoun “Wahancanka” ~Shield.
