Funeral services for Byron Norman Afraid of Bear, age 38, of Slim Buttes, SD, will be at 1:00 PM on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at the Afraid of Bear residence in Slim Buttes, SD with Sister Barb officiating.
Burial will be at the Afraid of Bear Family Cemetery in Slim Buttes, SD.
A one-night wake service will begin at 10:00 AM on Friday, November 18, 2016 at the Afraid of Bear residence in Slim Buttes, SD.
Byron was born January 10, 1978 in Pocatello, ID to Cathleen (Woonsock) Afraid of Bear and Fred Afraid of Bear Sr. He joined the spirit world on November 11, 2016 at Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, SD.
Byron worked as a Slot Technician at the Prairie Winds Casino, a police officer for OST Public Safety, and a Ranch Hand at Quinn Cow Company.
Byron was a traditional dancer in his younger years and loved playing his X-Box 360. Anyone who knew Byron knew he had a love for his cats and working at the Quinn Cow Company, where he had a special connection with cows. Byron knew Connie and Rueben Quinn for many years and always had a special place in his heart for them.
Byron was a good-hearted person, loved everyone, and was very friendly. No one was a stranger to him because he would greet them with a friendly handshake and be more than willing to help in any way he could. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Survivors include parents Cathleen (Woonsock) Afraid of Bear and Fred Afraid of Bear Sr. of Slim Buttes; brothers Fred (Winona) Afraid of Bear Jr. of Mansfield, SD and Brandon Afraid of Bear and Jon M. Afraid of Bear of Slim Buttes, SD; aunts Rose (Afraid of Bear) Becenti of North Platte, NE and Esther Burns of Ft. Hall, ID; uncle George Afraid of Bear Jr. of Slim Buttes, SD; and nieces Jasmine Afraid Of Bear and Aliyah and Linsy Two Lance, all from Mansfield, SD.
He was preceded in death by grandparents Catherine and Norman Woonsock, Annie (Kills Crow) Afraid of Bear, and George Afraid of Bear Sr.; uncles Ernest Afraid of Bear Sr., Larue Joe Afraid of Bear, Steven Jacob Afraid of Bear, Richard Afraid of Bear, Francis Afraid of Bear, and Robert Gunn Afraid of Bear; and aunt Nelda Woonsock.
Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge, SD is in charge of arrangements for Byron Norman Afraid of Bear.
