01/21/2017 - Anna (Plenty Holes) Fire Thunder
A Mass of Christian Burial for Anna (Plenty Holes) Fire Thunder, age 92, will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at the Wounded Knee District School in Manderson, SD with Father Edmund Yainao, S.J., and Joyce Tibbitts officiating. Traditional Lakota services will be provided by Chris Eagle Hawk.
Burial will be at St. Paul Episcopal Cemetery in Manderson, SD.
Anna was born on April 22, 1924 at her home in Rockyford, SD to George and Louise (White) Plenty Holes. She passed away peacefully on January 17, 2017 at the Bennett County Hospital in Martin, SD.
Anna grew up riding horses and attended Holy Rosary boarding school. After graduation, she went to Springfield, SD for her teacher’s certificate. Shortly after, she met Floyd, and they had three children: Floyd Jr., Linda, and Kathy. Later she returned to college and was the first Oglala Lakota woman to earn her Master of Arts degree from Black Hills State University. She taught a total of 48+ years in Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, and South Dakota, but spent a majority of her teaching career on the Pine Ridge Reservation. When she retired, she started her business called Anna's Quilting. The most famous people she made quilts for were Phil Jackson, Bill Paxton, Michael Jordan, and a king from Africa. She enjoyed traveling, playing slot machines, eating fries, and spending time with her family.
Anna is survived by daughter Linda Fire Thunder of Spearfish, SD; sister Lawanda Her Many Horses of Manderson, SD; grandchildren Darnell Hawk of Manderson, SD and Katana Jackson of Box Elder, SD; and great-grandchildren Kellin Fisher of Box Elder, SD, Amaya Hawk of Oglala, SD, and Luke DeSersa of Manderson, SD.
Anna was preceded in death by spouse Floyd Fire Thunder Sr.; parents George and Louise Plenty Holes; son Floyd Fire Thunder Jr.; daughter Kathy Fire Thunder; and 11 siblings.
