03/03/2017 - Lyle Blue Legs Sr.

Funeral services for Lyle Duane Blue Legs Sr. “Sunka Owankan,” age 59, will be at 2:00 PM on Friday, March 3, 2017 at the Crazy Horse School Gym in Wanblee, SD. Traditional Lakota services will be provided by Richard Moves Camp.
 
Burial will be at the Gethsemane Episcopal Cemetery in Wanblee, SD.
 
A two-night wake service will begin with the first night running from 12:00 PM-2:00 PM on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at the Blue Legs Residence, at the Pine Ridge School Campus Housing #301 in Pine Ridge, SD. It will continue at 2:30 PM on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at the Pine Ridge High School Gym in Pine Ridge, SD. The second night will begin at 5:00 PM on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at the Crazy Horse School Gym in Wanblee, SD.
 
Lyle was a veteran in the U.S. Army.
 
Lyle was born on August 3, 1957 to Melissa (Meat) and Taylor Blue Legs Sr. in Wanblee, S.D. He attended CrazyHorseDay School until high school; where he attended RedCloudIndianSchool his freshman, sophomore and junior years. He returned to CrazyHorseSchool his senior year, where he graduated in 1976. He then attended Black HillsState in Spearfish from the fall of ‘76 to spring ‘77. In 1977, Lyle enlisted in the Army and graduated from Basic Training in Fort Knox, KY. He also married Cecelia Lamont on December 2. He was later honorably discharged and was a proud veteran thereafter. Upon returning to Wanblee, he worked as a police officer and as an EMT. He was also a certified lifeguard. He earned two A.A. degrees in Education from OglalaLakotaCollege. Lyle worked at CrazyHorseSchool from 1981 until 1996, and in 1996, he was hired at PineRidgeSchool as a bus driver. He eventually transitioned into working as a full-time special education ed tech. Lyle loved sports and played golf, basketball, baseball and football throughout high school. He also played college football at BHSU and was one of the original Blue Bandits (baseball). He was very friendly and easy to talk to. He was sociable, had a great sense of humor, and enjoyed watching sports, baseball/softball especially. He was a Minnesota Vikings and Los Angeles Lakers fan. But his most favorite team was the Pine Ridge Thorpes, where he found his home, his Thorpe family. He worked at the PineRidgeSchool for 21 years and genuinely loved his job. He strongly believed in getting an education and being independent. Lyle was a traditional man and believed in the Lakota way of life. He loved attending powwows and annually attended the Oglala Nation powwow, the Black Hills powwow, and Denver March powwow. He was the greatest Papa to all of his grandchildren, whom he adored and was very proud of. Lyle was an amazing husband, father, brother and Papa; he is loved and will be greatly missed.
 
Lyle is survived by wife Cecelia (Lamont) Blue Legs of Pine Ridge, SD; siblings Melda Hawkins of Watertown, SD, Joann Rockwood and Ione Bingham of Enemy Swim, SD, Meredith Blue Legs and Wesley Hawkins of Wanblee, SD, and Donna DeCost of Chadron, NE; children Lyle (Bobbie) Blue Legs Jr., and Brittany Blue Legs of Rapid City, SD, Mandi (Andrew) Blue Legs of Pine Ridge, SD, Lori (Cowboy) White Hawk of Manderson, SD, and Lucy (Tyrell) Smith of Newtown, ND; hunka sons Brandon Bettelyoun and Gordy Janis; hunka daughter Kanisha Rooks; grandkids Lareese, Cincala, Leonna, Bryanna, Neves, Yamni, Lucas Jon, Cecelia “Cissy”, Baby Backward, Evangeline “Sister”, Michelle, Kaycee Bay, Genio Ray, Tayson, Liyim, Mikiyela, and Irena “Lil Girl”; hunka grandson Skyler Rowland; one great-granddaughter on the way; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and grandkids.
 
Lyle was preceded in death by grandpa Blue (Thomas Blue Legs); parents Taylor “Wally” and Melissa (Meat) Blue Legs; siblings Harley Dean, Taylor Jr., Lorna Mae, Ronald George, Gary Blue Legs Sr., Cordelia Hawkins and Pat Rockwood Sr.; grandchildren Vincent Lakota Twiss-Blue Legs, Wicahpi White Hawk, Baby White Hawk, and Baby Blue Legs; hunka dad Dawson Has No Horse Sr.; nephews Arlan Bissonette, Stuart Langdeau, and Corby Langdeau; and niece Mona Langdeau.
