03/27/2017 - Vera Maxine Gehrig
Services for Vera Maxine Gehrig, age 82, will be held at the Methodist Church in Hay Springs, NE on Monday March 27 at 10:00 with Reverend Paul Smith officiating. Burial will follow at the Gordon, NE cemetery, and a celebration of life and dinner back at the Methodist Church in Hay Springs will follow.
Maxine passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at her home in Hay Springs, NE and was surrounded by family. She was born on December 12, 1934 to Cecil and Vera Dahlgren of Gordon, NE. Maxine married Myron Gehrig, also of Gordon on December 9, 1953. Together they had 4 children of their own Doug (Sandie) of Hay Springs NE, Barry (Nancy) of Kaycee WY, Mich (Patty) of Winthrop Harbor, IL and Myra (ROB) of Hot Springs SD, but she was MOM to so many more including her step children Dennis, Vickie and Connie.
Maxine wore many hats in her extensive careers. She developed the programs for the State of Nebraska and South Dakota for the mentally challenged. She was guest speaker on many occasions on the subject for elected officials and college professors. She was also a Veterans advocate in South Dakota. She worked relentlessly for veterans to get them their benefits. She had all the elected officials on her “speed dial.” Her favorite job was being a foster grandma and a grandma to her own family. She received many awards throughout her storied career including a letter form the President of the United States.
Grandma MAX had 10 grandchildren from Doug: Jake, Jason, and Morgan - Barry: Eric, Kara - Mich: Megan, Mich Jr. and Mikaela – Myra: Cody – Vickie: Shane. She treasured her 5 great-grandchildren immensely.
She was preceded in death by her parents Cecil and Vera Dahlgren, sisters Betty and Mary Lois and stepson Dennis.
She is survived by brother Nick (Judy), sister Yvonne (Don) and care dog Lilly.
