Funeral services for Joseph Leroy Garreaux, age 71, will be at 11:30 AM on Monday, March 27, 2017 at the Sioux Funeral Home in Pine Ridge, SD. Traditional Lakota services will be provided by Richard Broken Nose.
Burial will be at 3:00 PM on Monday, March 27, 2017 at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD.
Visitation will be from 10:00 AM-11:00 PM on Monday, March 27, 2017 at the Sioux Funeral Home in Pine Ridge, SD.
Joseph was a veteran in the U.S. Army.
Joseph was born on January 23, 1946 in Eagle Butte, SD to Sophie Sits Poor and George Garreaux and was adopted and raised by Gus and Bernice Chase In Sight. He made his journey to the Spirit World on March 18, 2017 in Rapid City, SD.
Joseph is survived by sisters Genevieve Ribitsch of #4 Community and Vivan Henry of White River, SD; special companion Joanne Two Two of Rapid City, SD; nieces Tess Chase In Sight of #4 Community, Natasha Ballentine of Tampa, FL, Riva Red Feather of Lincoln, NE, and Leeann Craft of Midland, SD; nephews Gentry Ribitsch and Bo Sits Poor of Pine Ridge, SD; cousins Patrick Yellow Thunder, Orville Yellow Thunder, and Curtis Yellow Thunder of Hot Springs, SD, and Tom Yellow Thunder of Texas, Forrest Sits Poor, Kevin Sits Poor, Franklin Sits Poor III, Marilyn Sits Poor, and Milo Sits Poor, all of Oglala, SD; Emma Red Elk, Matilda Red Elk, Richard Red Elk, Patsy and Wilbur Red Elk, all of Manderson, SD; aunt Sylvia Yellow Thunder of Hot Springs, SD; special granddaughter Genriel “Teesteela” Ribitsch of Broomfield, CO; 13 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.
Joseph was preceded in death by grandparents Frank and Sarah Sits Poor; biological parents Sophie Sits Poor and George Garreaux; adopted parents Gus and Bernice Chase In Sight; brother Wayne Holy Rock; uncles Frank and Neville Sits Poor; and aunts Matilda Sits Poor and Pheobe Red Elk.
