03/31/2017 - Owen Joseph Patton Jr.
Funeral services for Owen Joseph Patton Jr. “Wicasa Isnala Najin,” age 61, will be at 10:00 AM on Friday, March 31, 2017 at the Brother Rene Hall in Oglala, SD with Father Joe Daoust, S.J., officiating. Traditional Lakota services will be provided by Cornell Conroy.
Burial will be at Our Lady of Good Counsel Cemetery in Oglala, SD.
A two-night wake service will begin at 2:00 PM on Wednesday and Thursday, March 29-30, 2017 at the Brother Rene Hall in Oglala, SD.
Owen was born on September 2, 1955 in Crawford, NE to Sara (Hawk) Forney and Owen Patton Sr. He made his journey to the Spirit World on March 25, 2017 in Sioux Falls, SD.
Owen, or OJ as he was known to his family and friends, was the first of his siblings. OJ mostly grew up in Scottsbluff, NE, where he made many lifelong friends.
Throughout his life, OJ worked as a police officer for Public Safety and a tribal liaison for the Oglala Sioux Tribe. He also worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad and was an AA counselor for many years. He also worked in Native American Studies for the Nebraska school districts and the governor of Nebraska. He married Julie Feather, and to this union, a daughter, Shauna, was born. He later married Gloria Hernandez in 1999, and they shared their lives until his passing.
OJ was a very kind and loving man who enjoyed life. His favorite past-times were going to the casino and listening to music (especially AC/DC and blues music). OJ was greatly loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
Owen is survived by wife Gloria (Hernandez) Patton of Nebraska; mother Sara (Hawk) Forney of Oglala, SD; daughter Shauna Neuman of Boyden, IA; siblings Thomas (Lou Youngman) Patton Sr. of Oglala, SD, Donald Patton of San Diego, CA, Sandra Mabin of Oglala, SD, Madonna (Mike) Shepherd of Guernsey, WY, Eldon (Alva) Forney of Wounded Knee, SD, Cheryl Forney of Oglala, SD, Mitzi (Coy) Big Crow of Oglala, SD and Paul (Missie Hudspeth) Forney of Oglala, SD; stepfather Darold Forney of Oglala, SD; nephews Thomas Patton Jr., Joshua Williams, Ryan Forney, Tyler Wright, Michael Wright, Eric Mabin, Nathaniel Simpson, Bradley Forney, Derek Young Man, Wakinyan Forney and River Forney; nieces Melissa Patton, Ashley Forney, Shaina Forney and Samantha Young Man; stepchildren Rusty West, Kelly West and Kristian Trimble; and grandchildren Andrew and Cheyenne Neuman and Jessica Trimble.
Owen was preceded in death by father Owen Patton Sr.; sister Christian Patton; brother Troy Dean Mabin; stepson Anthony Hernandez; and grandparents Talton and Jenny (Hat) Hawk and Thomas and Alice (Bear Robe) Patton.
Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge, SD is in charge of arrangements for Owen Joseph Patton Jr.
