Funeral services for Michael Joseph Hawk “Wanbli Hoksila,” age 85, will be at 10:00 AM on Thursday, April 13, 2017 at the Brother Rene Hall in Oglala, SD with Father Joe Dauost, S.J., and Sister Barb Bogenschutz officiating. Traditional Lakota services will be provided by Ivis Long Visitor.
Burial will be at the Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Cemetery in Oglala, SD.
A one-night wake service will begin at 4:00 PM on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at the Brother Rene Hall in Oglala, SD, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 6:30 PM on Wednesday evening, also at the Brother Rene Hall.
Michael was a veteran in the U.S. Army.
Michael was born on November 19, 1931 in the Drywood Community north of Oglala, SD to Tal and Jennie (Hat) Hawk. He made his journey to the Spirit World on April 9, 2017 at his home in the Drywood Community near Oglala, SD.
Michael is survived by daughters Tillie Hawk of Rapid City, SD and Joy (Josef) Marks of Chesapeake, VA; son Daniel Garneaux of Chesapeake, VA; brothers Lambert (Mary) Hawk of Pine Ridge, SD and Steven (Pru) Hawk of Oglala, SD; sister Sarah (Darold) Forney of Oglala, SD; 14 grandchildren; and 8 grandchildren.
Michael was preceded in death by daughter Beverly Hawk; son Lee Hawk; and sisters Phoebe Thunder Horse and Tillie White.
Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge, SD is in charge of arrangements for Michael Joseph Hawk.
