03/19/2018 - Clifford Richards Sr.
A Mass of Christian Burial Services for Clifford Wayne Richards Sr. “Akicita Blehiciya” (Encouraging Soldier), age 83, will be at 10:00 AM on Monday, March 19, 2018 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pine Ridge, SD with Father Peter Klink, S.J., officiating. Traditional Lakota services will be provided by Sam Moves Camp and Clifford Wayne Richards Jr.
Burial will be at the Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery in Pine Ridge, SD.
A wake service will begin at 1:00 PM on Sunday, March 18, 2018 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pine Ridge, SD with Rosary services starting at 7:00 PM. Military Roll Call will immediately follow.
Clifford was a veteran in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Clifford was born on April 26, 1934 in Pine Ridge, SD to Agatha Richard-Jones. He made his journey to the Spirit World on March 13, 2018 at the Prairie Hills Assisted Living in Rapid City, SD.
Clifford was raised by grandparents Alfred and Loretta Richards in Tuthill, SD, where he spent the majority of his childhood years. Clifford attended OglalaCommunitySchool until his 10th year and completed his GED a few years later. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on September 23, 1952. During his time in the Marine Corps, Clifford received the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Medal, and the National Defense Medal. He transferred from the USMC to MCR with obligated service and was later honorably discharged on February 19, 1955. Clifford retired from government services after working in the areas of maintenance, a bus driver for PineRidgeSchool, patient transportation for the Kyle and Wanblee Health Clinics, and RS Construction, building homes on the reservation.
Clifford is survived by wife Lorraine Yellow Boy-Richards; children Willie (Angie) Richards of Pine Ridge, SD, Joseph (Brandi) Richards Sr. of Box Elder, SD, Jessica Richards of Rapid City, SD, Anita (Reed) Brown-Clifford of Wanblee, SD, Wayne “Beaver” (Brenna) Richards Jr. of Rapid City, SD, Alfreda (Dean) Patton of Pine Ridge, SD, Jennifer Richards of Rapid City, SD, James “Jimo” (Dee) Richards of Wanblee, SD, Stephanie (Darrell) Apple of Kyle, SD, Filmore Richards of Pine Ridge, SD, and Tyonnia Richards of Pine Ridge, SD; grandchildren Sidney Richards of Durango, CO, Garrett and Allie Jo Richards of Pine Ridge, SD, Joe Jr., Adonis, and Noah Richards, all of Box Elder, SD, Lariah Richards of Pine Ridge, SD, and Sophia and Bella Mike of Rapid City, SD; sisters Irene McDaniels of Mission, SD, Sandra Richards of Rapid City, SD, Gwendolyn Richards-Clifford, and Theresa Richards; 38 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Clifford was preceded in death by first wife Dorothy Richards; parents Alfred and Loretta Richards; sons Lyle, Rodney, and Casey Richards; grandsons Shawn Brown and Stephan Lyle Patton; great-grandson Stephen Wayne Patton; brothers Darrell Richards and Dean Richards; and sisters Violet Richards-Church and Marjorie Lunderman.
Pallbearers will be Rich Patton, Orren Janis, Garrett Richards, Kevin Bettelyoun, Rodney Richards, Chance Winters, Chris Yellow Boy, Eric Yellow Boy, Corey Yellow Boy and Tom Yellow Boy.
