Karen passed away on March 20, 2018 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff, NE, following a brave battle with a neurological disorder known as myasthenia gravis
She was born on November 16, 1944 in Crawford, NE to Luther Clayton (Red) and Catherine Corbin. Karen was the third child of four born to this union. She was raised in Crawford and attended Crawford High School, marrying Floyd J. Serres on May 29, 1963. The couple lived in various locations, including Fort Robinson, Crawford and Sioux County until they settled in Crawford to raise their family. They were married 54 years and had three sons.
Karen was the Site Manager for the Western Nebraska Aging Office and Director of the Dawes County Senior Center for over 35 years. She was devoted to the people she served at the Center and nurtured and cared for them. She had a lot of fun thinking of special activities for them. Karen was community-minded and involved in man organization and events. She had a lot of fun line-dancing with the Galloping Grannies and being part of the Red Hat Society. She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church since 1963 and was active in the Altar Society.
Family was very dear to Karen. She always had time to attend any activities that involved her children or grandchildren. She sat in the bleachers at many, many events. Her family was very fortunate because she showed her loving by preparing special foods for them (like her potato salad and deviled eggs). She was always up for a game, a nice phone chat, or just to sit and enjoy someone’s company. She was very excited and looking forward to the birth of her first great-grandson in May. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister and aunt.
Floyd and Karen enjoyed camping and really liked serving as camp hosts for campgrounds. Karen loved traveling and spending time with her family in Idaho and Washington. She will be missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by husband Floyd Serres; sons Larry (Deb) of Potter, NE, Neal of Crawford, NE, and Casey (Nancy) of Mitchell, NE; grandchildren Bryant (Amanda), Brittany, Clint, Cody (Nicole), Clayton, (Tara) Mitchell, and Mackenzie; brother Bruce Corbin; sisters Shirley Deichert and Janice German; and step-brother Ronnie Leetch.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers-in-law Tony Deichert and Bryan Sanford.
Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements for Karen Kay Serres.
