A Mass of Christian Burial for Margaret Melvina (Cottier) Yellow Bird-Steele, age 97, will be at 11:00 AM on Monday, April 2, 2018 at the Rockyford School Gymnasium in Rockyford, SD with the officiant to be announced.
Burial will be at the St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in Rockyford, SD.
A two-night wake service will begin at 3:00 PM on Saturday, March 31, 2018 at the Rockyford School Gymnasium in Rockyford, SD with Rosary Services starting at 7:00 PM on Sunday, April 1, 2018 at the Gym in Rockyford, SD.
Margaret was born on June 23, 1920 to John Cottier and Agnes Janis in Allen, SD. She made her journey to the Spirit World on March 23, 2018 in Pine Ridge, SD.
Margaret had six brothers, Kenneth, Jack, Leo, Bert, Robert and Raymond, and five sisters, Isabelle, Lillian, Roseanne, Eleanor and Lucy. She married William Asay (Josh) Steele on January 18, 1946 at Rockyford, SD. They had six children, John, Fern, Duane, Franklin, Timothy and Luanne. They also adopted Aldene, Aldon, Harold and Mark. They had approximately 250 children pass through their home as foster children and received an award for being the Best Foster Parents in the State of South Dakota. They also have 34 grandchildren, 106 great-grandchildren, and 48 great-great-grandchildren.
Margaret worked at the Fish Hook Factory, C.H.R. Program, and as a Teacher’s Aide in HeadStart. Her best friend and cousin, Pearl (Brewer) White Face, turned 98 in February, with Margaret turning 98 in June.
Margaret and William lived in Rockyford, SD for 10 years then moved to Manderson, SD for the next years until he died. Margaret then moved to Sharp’s Corner, SD where she lived until she followed William.
