Mabel C. Janis was born on December 18, 1936 to Wilson Janis and Alice (Fool Head) Janis at Kyle, SD. Mabel passed away on March 27, 2018 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, SD surrounded by her loving family.
Mabel graduated from the Pine Ridge High School (OCHS) in 1956 and went onto college and received her Licensed Practical Nurse Degree. Mabel was one of the first Community Health Representatives for the Oglala Sioux Tribe and gave over 28 years of service to the Pine Ridge IHS and Kyle Health Center. Mabel was recognized in 1985 for her outstanding work and received the Superior Work Performance I.H.S. Award and in May of 2015 Oglala Lakota College recognized her for being a Preserver of the Lakota Languages.
Mabel is survived by her son, Thomas Dean Janis; two grandchildren, Damon Thomas Janis and Dannikah Janis whom she cherished and loved very much; and cousin, Verine Cedar Face-White.
Mabel was preceded in death by her parents, Wilson and Alice (Fool Head) Janis; brothers, Wilson K. Janis and Everette E. Janis; sisters, Louise Janis, Evelyn Long Soldier-Janis, Ora Janis, and Mrytle Fool Head-Grosz; grandsons, Christopher E. Janis, and Shawn Long Soldier; and nephew, Charles Long Soldier, Sr.
Wake Services: Two night wake service starting at 1:00 PM, Thursday, April 5, 2018 at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church Hall in Kyle, SD with prayer services starting at 7:00 PM each night.
Funeral Services: 2:00 PM, Saturday, April 7, 2018 at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church Hall in Kyle, SD
Officiating: Pastor Kim & Charles Montileaux and Rev. Cordelia Red Owl
Burial Services: St. Barnabas Episcopal Cemetery, Kyle, SD
