04/23/2018 - Sally Jane (Nelson) Bohdan
A Mass of Christian Burial for Sally Jane (Nelson) Bohdan “He Sapa Winyan,” age 61, will be at 10:00 AM on Monday, April 23, 2018 at the St. Isaac Jogue’s Catholic Church in Rapid City, SD with Father Ed Witt, S.J., officiating. Traditional Lakota services will be provided by Alvin Iron Cloud Sr.
Burial will be at 11:30 AM on Monday, April 23, 2018 at the Pine Lawn Memorial Cemetery in Rapid City, SD.
Vigil services will be from 4:30-9:00 PM on Sunday, April 22, 2018 at the St. Isaac Jogue’s Catholic Church in Rapid City, SD with Rosary Services starting at 7:00 PM on Sunday night at the church.
Sally passed away on April 15, 2018 in Deadwood, SD. She was born on June 21, 1956 to Delbert and Amelia (DuBray) Nelson at Igloo, SD at the Black Hills Army Ordinance Depot. Sally’s Lakota Name is “He Sapa Winyan,” meaning Black Hills Woman. Sally was the 3rd child of Delbert and Amelia; her older sister is Dorine Nelson and older brother is Patrick Nelson.
Sally moved to various Army Bases with her family, and in 1969, the family made Rapid City their home. Sally attended school at Igloo, SD, Williams, AZ, Allen, SD, and Pine Ridge, SD. Sally and her sister were arts and crafts women, making beaded jewelry and star quilts for many of the gift shops in Keystone, SD, Crazy Horse Mountain, Sioux Museum, Sioux Pottery, and Prairie Edge. Sally worked at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center for many years, at the Beverly Enterprise as a Certified Nurse’s Assistant, and at various other jobs.
Sally loved going to Pow-wows, as her sister had been Miss Indian Black Hills for 9 years and upon Dorine’s passing, Sally was chosen to finish out Dorine’s reign. So in 1978, Sally became Miss Indian Black Hills and Sally and her family enjoyed going to Sundances, Pow-wows, picnic gatherings, fishing, and church events. In 1979, Sally met Dennis Kapfenstein and married him. After that, Sally took care of her mother and enjoyed sewing star quilts and going to BINGO with her mother. In 1996, Sally became the mother of her son, Pershing Joshua Nelson, the love of her life. She enjoyed taking care of him all throughout his life. In 1999, Sally was on Dialysis, and Joshy would keep her company. In 2006, she met another love in her life, Joe Bohdan, and in March 2007, Joshy and Joe and brother Pat took her to Sioux Falls to get her new kidney transplant. She finally had her wish to see her son grow up to be a very nice young man. Sally had the honor of four women that she was proud to call her sisters, Cindy Pullen Esposti, Barbara Vitale, Ellen Rascoe, and Sharlene Quilt. When things seemed to be impossible, they all helped her to become stronger.

Sally is survived by spouse Joe Bohdan of Rapid City, SD; son Joshua Nelson of Rapid City, SD; god-daughter Hazel Iron Cloud of Houston, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Sally was preceded in death by parents Delbert and Amelia (DuBray) Nelson; sister Dorine Nelson; brother Patrick Nelson; and grandparents Eugene and Eva (Hawkins) DuBray and Pete Nelson.
