05/29/2018 - David 'R.C.' Janis-Black Elk

Funeral services for David “R.C.” Michael Janis-Black Elk, age 24, will be at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at the Pine Ridge Elementary School Gymnasium in Pine Ridge, SD with Reverend Rhoda Mesteth officiating. Traditional Lakota services will be provided by Fred Cedar Face.
 
Burial will be at the Black Elk Family Cemetery on Little’s Flat.
 
A one-night wake service will begin at 1:00 PM on Monday, May 28, 2018 at the Pine Ridge Elementary School Gymnasium in Pine Ridge, SD with evening services starting at 7:00 PM.
 
David was born on June 4, 1993 in Pine Ridge, SD to Ben Black Elk and Patricia Janis. He made his journey to the Spirit World on May 21, 2018 in Pine Ridge, SD.
 
David is survived by father Benedict Black Elk; stepmother Marla Under Baggage; mother Patricia “Patchee” Janis; daughter Betty Rain Lynn Janis; stepson Christopher Roubideaux; brothers Kristan and Kenneth Black Elk; sisters Faye “Bernie” Richard, Justine Black Elk-Carlow, Carrie Black Elk, Jessica Black Elk, Iva “Baby Iva” Black Elk, Creedance “Gari Dawn” Janis-Brown Bull, and Red Fawn Fallis; girlfriend Tina Sitting Holy; uncles Tom and Enos Poor Bear, Clifford and Owen Black Elk, and Gary, O.D., and Robert Janis; aunts Iva Black Elk-Roy, Fredia, Marlene, and Michelle Poor Bear, Arlette (Mike) Janis-Tyon, and Lorita Running Hawk; and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.
 
David was preceded in death by brother Benedict Black Elk Jr.; maternal grandparents Kenneth Janis Sr. and Bertha Yellow Hawk; paternal grandparents Wilson Black Elk Sr. and Mabel Red Shirt; uncles Webster Poor Bear, Loren Black Elk, Wilson “Wally” Black Elk, and Kenneth “Brown Boy” Janis; and aunts Stella Black Elk and Charlene Janis.
 
Pallbearers will be Mike Carlow, Calvin Monroe, Robert Merrival, Marcus McBride, O.D. Janis, Owen Black Elk, James McDonald, Devon Janis, Fred Brings Him Back, and Anthony Gomez.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge, SD is in charge of arrangements for David “R.C.” Michael Janis-Black Elk.
