06/09/2018 - Barbara 'Bobbie' Nowlen Beye
Memorial services for Barbara “Bobbie” Lee Nowlen Beye, age 84, of Rockville, MD, formerly of Chadron, NE, will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Lincoln, NE with Reverend Kirstie Engel officiating.
Burial will follow at the Wyuka Cemetery.
Bobbie passed away peacefully on March 18, 2018. She was born July 25, 1933, the third child and only daughter of Charles and Melva Nowlen in Denver, CO. She had two older brothers, Charles Andrew Nowlen and William Nowlen. William died of pneumonia at about 6 months of age in 1932. Her older brother Charles grew up with her and lived until the 1990s.
Bobbie’s father was a Methodist pastor in the conferences encompassing Colorado and Wyoming. Her mother was an organist and choir director, assisting her husband as needed. Bobbie grew up in Methodist parsonages around Wyoming, including Laramie, Cody, Sheridan, and Casper. She attended Methodist summer camps.
Bobbie graduated from Casper High School in 1951. She continued her education at Casper Junior College, graduating Phi Theta Kappa in 1953. She continued academic studies in Evanston, IL, graduating from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in June 1955. While at Northwestern, she participated in the Wesley Foundation. There she met her husband of 46 years, Eugene Dale Beye, of Larned, KS. They were married on August 6, 1955.
They moved to Nebraska, living in Methodist church parsonages throughout Nebraska, including Grand Island, Hays Springs, Holdrege, Ithaca, Creighton, Lincoln, Norfolk, Chadron, Louisville, and Eustis. In Grand Island, Bobbie taught high school journalism until her eldest son, Eugene, was born in 1960. The young family moved to Hay Springs in 1962, where Dale was born in 1963. In 1965, the family moved to Holdrege. There, she wrote occasional stories for the local newspaper. In 1970, the family moved to Ithaca. While there, Bobbie and Eugene Senior began the process to adopt their third son, Jeff, who was born in 1970 and came to live with his new family in 1971. After moving her family to Creighton, Lincoln, and Norfolk, Bobbie returned to college, earning a master’s degree in special education from Wayne State College in Wayne.
When the smaller family moved to Chadron, she taught special education in extremely isolated rural schools around Chadron. After her boys were out of the house while living in Norfolk and Chadron, she also served one year as head of the United Methodist Women’s School of Christian Mission and attended national UMW assemblies.
When Eugene Senior and Bobbie retired in 1995 to Lincoln, her health deteriorated. In 2001, her marriage finally dissolved. She moved to Rockville, MD and became a member of Rockville United Methodist Church and a member of United Methodist Women.
For the last 12 years of her life, Bobbie was a resident of Sandy Spring Friends’ Home, first in assisted living and then in the nursing home.
She is survived by former husband Eugene Senior; sons Eugene (Janet), Dale (Sonya), and Jeffery; grandchildren Aaron (Jeny), Miki Vian (Micheal), Tori Hofrichter (Andric), David (Megan), Noah, Michael, Quenton, Isaiah, and Emily; and great-grandsons Shadrach and Cassious.
