Lowell passed away on June 4, 2018 at Ponderosa Villa in Crawford, NE. He was born on June 26, 1924 in Eagle, NE to Fred and Rhoda Muenchau. Lowell had three brothers and one sister. They all lived on a farm outside of Eagle. Lowell helped on the farm until he graduated from Eagle HS in 1942, and then was drafted into the Army in 1945.

After army life, his primary occupation/career was working for the Nebraska Department of Roads. He started working for the Roads Department in Lincoln, NE and then later was transferred to western Nebraska. He became superintendent and worked for the department for over 40 years. It was in Rushville, NE where he met Darlene Westlake, his life-long wife/partner of 68 years.

Once again he moved to the country and along with his roads career, he worked on his dream hobby farm where he and Darlene raised three children, Gary, Alan, and Lou Ann and various livestock and pets. Lowell loved dogs and always had a dog companion. He loved to drive his tractor and especially his four-wheeler. He loved to go check the cows and land and just to ride around admiring the wonderful landscape that he was so fortunately able to acquire.

Lowell retired from the Department of Roads in 1989 and devoted himself full-time to the farm/ranch.

He hated to leave his home in the country, but at age 90 moved to Prairie Pines Assisted Living in Chadron where he lived for two years. He enjoyed it there, visiting with fellow residences and friends. He always had a smile and very few negative remarks. His only real complaint was that he wished he had a dog and was able to ride his four-wheeler.

He was preceded in death by parents Fred and Rhoda Muenchau, wife Darlene, three brothers, one sister, and grandson Anthony. He is survived by son Gary of Chadron, NE and Barb Muenchau of Hot Springs, SD, grandson Christopher Muenchau of Chadron, NE; son Alan Muenchau of Fairfax, VA; daughter Lou Ann Muenchau and special friend Kenneth Maika of Chadron, NE; grandchildren Lowell T. Muenchau, wife Lily and great-grandchild of Leo, CA, Darla Saine-Reed, husband Trevor, and great-grandchildren Michael and Natalie Saine of Chadron, NE; and granddaughter Dana Muenchau of Castle Rock, CO.

Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements for Lowell Stephen Muenchau.
