Funeral services for Darlene Elizabeth Poor Bear “Wicahpi Wayanka Win,” age 72, will be at 1:00 PM on Friday, June 8, 2018 at the American Horse School in Allen, SD with Pastor Tim Wardell officiating. Traditional Lakota services will be provided by Steve DuBray and Robert Cross.
Burial will be at the Church of God Cemetery in Allen, SD.
A two-night wake service will begin at 4:00 PM on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at the American Horse School in Allen, SD.
Darlene was born on February 15, 1946 at home in Allen, SD to Theodore Poor Bear and Julie Lone Wolf. She made her journey to the Spirit World surrounded by her loving family on May 31, 2018 at Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, SD.
Darlene was known for her exceptional quilting work. Her star quilts can be seen all over the country, being displayed proudly by the people she has quilted them for. Darlene was also known by everyone as “Granny;” even people who did not know her called her that. She was always taking time for everyone and giving them attention, even if she did not know them. Darlene will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.
Darlene is survived by children James (Pamela Attack Him) Cross of Allen, SD, Elroy (Deb) Cross of Wanblee, SD, Cecile (Milton) Poor Bear of Martin, SD, and Ronald Cross and Richard Cross of Allen, SD; father to her children Cecil Cross of Allen, SD; grandchildren whom she raised Justin (Christine) Poor Bear, Quentin Red Bear, and Jamie Poor Bear, all of Allen, SD; great-granddaughter Niasha Whirlwind Horse of Martin, SD; sister Elaine (Lindolfo) Martinez of Allen, SD; brother Douglas Poor Bear of Allen, SD; hunka children Tony Marrufo of Kyle, SD, Maria Poor Bear of Martin, SD, and Hamid Pourvakil of Loveland, OH; hunka sisters Jurene Chief Eagle of Scottsbluff, NE and Mary Jane Goggles of Fort Washakie, WY; 21 grandchildren; and 58 great-grandchildren.
Darlene was preceded in death by parents Theodore Poor Bear and Julie Lone Wolf; son Myron Cross; sisters Clara Garcia, Myrtle Poor Bear, Rochelle Lone Wolf, and Angie Reyes; and brothers Orville Whirlwind Horse, Willard Poor Bear, Mike McArthur Poor Bear, and Roscoe Poor Bear.
