A Mass of Christian Burial for Virgil John Colhoff “Wiconi Waste Omani Wicasa” (Man Who Walks the Good Life), age 57, will be at 10:00 AM on Friday, July 13, 2018 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pine Ridge, SD with Father Edmund Yainao, S.J., officiating. Traditional Lakota services will be provided by Joseph Swift Bird.
Burial will be held at a later date.
A one-night wake service will start at 3:00 PM on Thursday, July 12, 2018 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pine Ridge, SD with Rosary services starting at 7:00 PM at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Virgil was born on March 21, 1961 in Pine Ridge, SD to Verdell and Josephine (Bettelyoun) Colhoff. He made his journey to the Spirit World on July 6, 2018 in Omaha, NE.
Virgil is survived by boys John-John and Tuffy Colhoff; daughter Jayde Bettelyoun; godson Christopher Walking Eagle; goddaughter Shianne Dillon; and siblings Russel Whalen Jr. (Donna), Marcie Whalen-Janis, Toni Colhoff-Richards, Cheryl White Rabbit, and Krystyne Bettelyoun, all of Pine Ridge, SD, and Tressee Colhoff of Rapid City, SD; nieces and nephews Dion, Quentin, Jesse, Russel III and Nathan Whalen, Waylon, Tanya and Heather Janis, Marissa Colhoff-Goings, Sheree Bagola, Ariel Richards, Paris Sullivan, Karissa and David Byington Jr.; 20 grandchildren and numerous extended nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. All will love and miss him always.
Virgil was preceded in death by parents Verdell and Josephine Colhoff; grandparents Edward and Vera (Red Shirt) Bettelyoun, Jim and Annie (Mesteth) Colhoff; uncles Ira “Gus” Colhoff, Herbert (Bernadine) Colhoff, Vestana Colhoff, Sophie (Morgan) Colhoff, Bertha Yellow Hawk, Althea Janis, Delphine (Newton) Two Two, Carrie (Clifford) Twiss, and Robert Bettelyoun; and siblings Nathan Whalen, Wade Colhoff, and Michelle Bettelyoun.
Virgil’s’ memory will be celebrated by his family and friends.
Virgil was a lover of life and traveled the world. He attended United Tribes in Bismarck, ND and received his degree in Culinary Arts in 1984. He then left South Dakota to pursue his career as a chef. He lived in many places, including Colorado, Utah, California, Washington State, Minnesota, New Mexico, Arizona and Hawaii, where he worked as the Head Chef at the Hilton Hotel. When he was done traveling the country, he moved home to be with his family, friends, nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. At the time of his passing, Virgil was a licensed advocate of the Oglala Sioux Tribal Court where he helped many family and friends.
Virgil had an adventurous, compassionate and comical spirit. He made friends everywhere he went and was known for always laughing and joking. Most would describe him as the “life of the party”. He will be deeply missed and forever loved.
Pallbearers are Lisa Schrader, Jeannie High Wolf, DeeAnn Twiss-Jackson, Connie Morgan-Richards, Cherie Clifford, Gwen Colhoff, Lynette Red Hair, and Aimee Ashton. The casket bearers for Virgil are Quentin and Nate Whalen, Waylon Janis, Herbie Colhoff-Goings, Coty Colhoff, Chris Walking Eagle, Jimbo Colhoff, and David Byington III.
The family of Virgil knows he had many, many dear friends and relatives. They would like to have all his friends as honorary pallbearers as they are very grateful to those friends and for the times spent with their beloved Virgil. They do not want to forget anyone and want everyone who loved him dearly to know that the memories held of him are special to not only the family, but Virgil as well.
