A memorial service for Robert L. Pich, age 89, will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at the United Church in Hot Springs, SD. A second service will follow at 3:00 PM at the American Legion in Martin, SD.
A memorial has been established for the Black Hills Hospice House in Rapid City, SD.
Bob was born on May 24, 1929 on his parents’ farm 11 miles west of Martin, SD (a half mile west of Swett). He passed away at the Black Hills Hospice House in Rapid City, SD on July 11, 2018 after a courageous battle with lung cancer, although he never smoked. Bob was a farmer and rancher all of his life. In 2008, he moved to Pine Hills Retirement Community in Hot Springs, SD.
Bob was a husband to Darlene (Henschel) and helped raise their daughters Tress, Connie, Helen and Patty on the family farm. He enjoyed hunting, especially with his grandsons Travis and Jesse Brown. Bob was a father and grandpa figure to many. In his later years, he had a special friend, Pearl Risinger, a kind and loving woman. She made Bob’s years in Hot Springs enjoyable, busy and adventurous.
Bob was not a man who needed “things” but worked just for the love of it! He was humble, kindhearted, and did not talk badly about anyone. Bob loved to visit with friends about what was going on. He knew what it meant to “be a neighbor,” always willing to help when needed. He loved getting to know people, from senators to hitchhikers! Strangers quickly became friends and friends became loved ones. Bob accepted change by saying, “It’s just the way it has to be!” He enthusiastically embraced new ideas in farming and tried many with an open mind. He knew what the farm and livestock markets were doing every day.
Bob said the most important decision he ever made in his life was when he joined Alcoholics Anonymous. By the grace of God and the fellowship of AA, he enjoyed 40 years of sobriety. He had empathy and was always ready to listen, but more than that, he was willing to help. He took many people to meetings and treatment centers day or night, anywhere in the state. As a part of his 12-step program, he took a daily inventory of his attitude, chose to be positive in his thoughts and actions, and carried the message of AA that sobriety is possible.
Bob leaves behind a family that will miss him greatly. He was very proud of his family – children Tress Pich, Connie Pich and Chuck Bossert, Helen Pich and Gary Babl, Patty and Bat Pourier; grandchildren Vernon (Julia) Emma, Nathan and Sophie Tystad, Justin (Rita) Payton, Hogan and Taylor Tystad, Jason (Dawn) Trinity and Tiffany Tystad, Angela Schuft, Christopher (Jessica) Bossert, Brit (Dave) Benlolo, Samantha Bossart, Travis (Loni) Tate and Maysa Brown, Jesse Brown, Tiffany Babl, Corey (Sheila) Taurie, Kenzie, Raylie Pourier, Tye (Nichole) Nate Dodd, Ahlaura Pourier, Katarina Dodd, Josslyn Pourier, and Tyson Pourier; nephew Gary (Bobby) Geersen; and niece Janet (Loren) Boulanger.
Bob was preceded in death by parents Joe and Mary Pich, sister Helen Geersen, brothers Jim and Leonard, wife Darlene, and friend Pearl Risinger.
