Funeral services for Gilbert LeRoy Ecoffey, age 78, will be at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pine Ridge, SD with Patrick Ashley officiating.
Burial will be at the Ecoffey Family Cemetery near Manderson, SD.
A one-night wake service will start at 4:30 PM on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pine Ridge, SD.
Gilbert was born on September 20, 1939 in Pine Ridge, SD to Frank “Posey” Ecoffey and Irene (Talbot) Ecoffey. He began his journey to the Spirit World on August 29, 2018 in Rock Springs, WY.
Growing up, Gilbert lived with his parents and brothers. He attended Oglala Community School, where he met his late wife, Myrtle Brafford. Mert and Gib had 4 girls, Patty, Peggy, Joleen and Tammy.
Gilbert started working for Oglala Sioux Housing in 1963. He was one of the “Pioneers of Housing” for the first housing project in Pine Ridge, SD. Gilbert was responsible for many people getting homes, and he enjoyed his job very much. He retired a few days before his passing.
Gilbert followed the family legacy and loved horse racing. He loved being at the barn with his horses or watching them race. He was well known in the race trade and shared his love of horses with his grandchildren and son. When he wasn’t with his horses, you could find Gilbert gambling. He enjoyed betting on the horses and dogs, playing cards or the slot machines. Later in life, he met his second wife, Michel Melvin. They shared their love of the horse trade. From this union, they had two children, Donnel Ecoffey and Gilbert Warren (G.W.) Ecoffey.
Gilbert is survived by wife Michel L. Melvin; children Patty (Nick) Cummings, Peggy (Monte) Wolf, Joleen Ecoffey, Tammy (Will) Crazy Bull, Donnel Ecoffey and Gilbert Warren (Taylor) Ecoffey; special nephews that he thought of as sons Robert Ecoffey Jr. and George Ecoffey; goddaughter Tonia Ecoffey; brothers Frank “Bob” Ecoffey and Fred Ecoffey; cousin (sister) Sissy Eagle Bull; sister-in-law Mae Whirlwind Horse; 21 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gilbert was preceded in death by parents Frank “Posey” and Irene Ecoffey; first wife Myrtle (Brafford) Ecoffey; sisters Katherine Zaccaro and Betty Steele; brothers-in-law Harold and Merle Bradford; sisters-in-law Lois Zura and Thelma Pourier; father-in-law Warren Melvin; and mother-in-law Donna (Maher) Melvin.
Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge, SD is in charge of arrangements for Gilbert LeRoy Ecoffey.
