09/13/2018 - Curtis Yellow Thunder

Funeral services for Curtis Henry Yellow Thunder, age 59, will be at 10:00 AM on Thursday, September 13, 2018 at the Brother Rene Hall in Oglala, SD with Sister Barb Bogenschutz and Father Joe Daoust, S.J., officiating. Traditional Lakota services will be provided by Ivis Long Visitor and Richard Broken Nose.
 
Burial will be at Highland Cemetery in Hot Springs, SD.
 
A one-night wake service will begin at 3:30 PM on Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at the Brother Rene Hall in Oglala, SD with rosary services to be held at 7:00 PM.
 
Curtis was born on January 25, 1959 in Pine Ridge, SD to Winfred Yellow Thunder and Sylvia Spotted Elk. He made his journey to the Spirit World on September 4, 2018 at Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, SD.
 
Curtis attended grade school at Loneman School near Oglala, SD and went to high school at Flandreau Indian School and graduated in 1978. After high school, Curtis went to Job Corps at Kicking Horse where he learned how to become a carpenter. 
 
Curtis loved sports and being outdoors; some of his favorites were basketball, softball, and football. He was an avid San Francisco 49ers fan, which led to many interesting conversation with his nieces and nephews. He loved spending time with his children, mother, grandchildren, siblings, nieces and nephews; there was never a dull moment. Curtis had a sense of humor that compared to no other; he always found happiness and humor in everything. He would always say, “Laugh as much as you can; it is the cheapest medicine.” 
 
Curtis’ health started to decline over the last two years, and he just was not himself. He started not being able to do the things he loved, and on September 4, he started his journey to the Spirit World where his family that passed before him met him with open arms. He will be missed dearly by all of his family that he left behind.  
 
Curtis is survived by mother Sylvia Yellow Thunder of Hot Springs, SD; children Lynette (Eric) Dubois of Hot Springs, SD and Kimberly Yellow Thunder of Rapid City, SD; stepchildren Dawnee Frogg of Rapid City, SD and Chasity Frogg of Pine Ridge, SD; siblings Thomas Yellow Thunder of Hot Springs, SD, Patrick Yellow Thunder of Custer, SD, and Genevieve Chase in Sight of #4 Community, SD; grandchildren Mariah Dubois and Nathaniel Dubois of Hot Springs, SD; nieces and nephews Joseph Yellow Thunder and Jim Yellow Thunder of Kyle, SD, Alisha Yellow Thunder of Hot Springs, SD, Jayme Yellow Thunder of Rapid City, SD, and Christopher Yellow Thunder of Hot Springs, SD, Riva Red Feather of Wakpamni Lake, SD, Gentry Ribitsch of Pine Ridge, SD, Natasha Ballentine of Sierra Vista, AZ, Carmelita New Holy of Oglala, SD, and Tess Chase in Sight of #4 Community, SD; and lifelong companion Charlotte Frogg of Rapid City, SD.
 
Curtis was preceded in death by father Winfred Yellow Thunder Sr.; brothers Reuben Yellow Thunder, Winfred Yellow Thunder Jr., James Yellow Thunder, and Orville Yellow Thunder; nephew Reuben Yellow Thunder Jr.; niece Alaina Yellow Thunder; stepson Shelby Sun Bear; and grandparents Winnie Chase In Sight, Bernice Chase In Sight, and Gus Chase In Sight.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge, SD is in charge of arrangements for Curtis Henry Yellow Thunder.
