10/03/2018 - Robert Cole Merrival

Funeral services for Robert Cole Merrival “Oyate C’ante Owicagnaka Hoksila” (He Has the People in His Heart Boy), age 25, will be at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at the Pine Ridge Elementary School Gym in Pine Ridge, SD with Mike Merrival officiating. Traditional Lakota services will be provided by Guy Dull Knife Jr.
 
Burial will be at the Wounded Knee Cemetery in Wounded Knee, SD.
 
A one-night wake service will begin at 4:00 PM on Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at the Pine Ridge Elementary School Gym in Pine Ridge, SD.
 
Robert began his sunrise on March 2, 1993, and his sunset was September 25, 2018 in Manderson, SD. He was born in Pine Ridge, SD to Thomas Poor Bear and Letoy Merrival. 
 
He graduated Kindergarten at Wounded Knee District School, 8th grade from Crazy Horse School, and graduated high school from Pine Ridge. He attained his AA Degree in Tribal Law from Oglala Lakota College in 2017. He was to receive his Bachelor’s degree next spring from OLC. Robert was blessed with his beautiful daughter Madison Rae “Maddy” on July 10, 2014 and was a devoted father. He was an avid Broncos fan, enjoyed his family and friends and was determined to get his degree and be an advocate for the grassroots Oyate. Robert was an active supporter of the American Indian Movement and marched with his father and relatives in support of many important issues facing the Indigenous peoples. He had a true passion for his people and had dreams of becoming an attorney and defending the rights of the Lakota. Robert cared very deeply for his tiyospaye and will be greatly missed.
 
Robert is survived by daughter Madison Rae and her mother Maurina Jensen of Pine Ridge, SD; parents Thomas Poor Bear of Wanblee, SD and Letoy Merrival of White Butte Community; sister Evangeline Poor Bear of Wanblee, SD; brothers Pete Felix Poor Bear and Howard Burritt Poor Bear of Rapid City, SD, Christopher Bettelyoun Poor Bear of Flagstaff, AZ, and Charles Merrival Poor Bear of Wounded Knee; hunka brother George Ecoffey of Wounded Knee, SD; hunka sisters Ashley, Adrienne and Alana Means of Potato Creek, SD; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and relatives.
 
Robert was preceded in death by paternal grandparents Enos Poor Bear Sr. and Mabel Red Shirt; maternal grandparents Russell “Rusty” Merrival Sr. and Lillian Janis Merrival; uncles Wilson “Wally” Black Elk Jr., Loren Black Elk, Norman Merrival, Russell “Boo Boo” Merrival, and Webster Poor Bear; aunts Evangeline Poor Bear and Annette Merrival; cousins Shelly Poor Bear, Annie Colhoff, David “RC” Janis and Joe Red Willow.
 
Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge, SD is in charge of arrangements for Robert Cole Merrival “Oyate C’ante Owicagnaka Hoksila” (He Has the People in His Heart Boy).
