Funeral services for Alvin Vern Milk, age 44, will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at the LaCreek CAP Office in Martin, SD with the officiant To Be Announced.

Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Hisle, SD.

A one-night wake service will begin at 1:00 PM on Friday, October 5, 2018 at the LaCreek CAP Office in Martin, SD with evening services starting at 7:00 PM.

Alvin was born on January 3, 1974 in Martin, SD to Melvin Milk Sr. and Lorraine Cottier-Tallman. He made his journey to the Spirit World on September 29, 2018 at Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, SD.

Alvin was raised by aunt and uncle Almanda and Jerry Douthit in Hisle, SD. He graduated from Crazy Horse High School on May 17, 1992 and received a number of medals and plaques for being the Most Valuable Player. He enjoyed sports very much. He was an avid fan of the Minnesota Vikings and the Nebraska Huskers.

After graduating, he spent time traveling to visit his brother in Alaska. Alvin returned to South Dakota to work on his aunt and uncle’s ranch in Hisle, SD.

Alvin respected the traditional ways of life. He enjoyed spending time with his family, visiting, joking and laughing. He also enjoyed watching his nieces and nephews play in school sports.

Alvin attended Oglala Lakota College and graduated with an Associate of Arts degree in Liberal Studies on June 24, 2012. Wowapisuta Woohiye.

Before his death, Alvin enrolled in Oglala Lakota College to pursue his A.A. in Elementary Education. His remarks were, “Laughter and happiness is good medicine.” Alvin enjoyed his companionship with Ione. They took good care of each other and loved each other very much. For those who knew him, he was a humble, friendly and generous person. He will be greatly missed.

Alvin is survived by special friend Ione LaMont of Martin, SD; brothers Melvin Milk Jr. of Fairbanks, AK and Louis Shaw of Wanblee, SD; sisters Caroline Richards of Allen, SD, Zoey Shaw of Rapid City, SD, Winnie and Kendra Shaw of Denver, CO, and Sally Douthit of Martin, SD; nieces Shoshanna Oldman, Purestyn Milk, Kimberly Red Feather, Linda Red Feather, and Angela Richards; nephews Christopher Oldman, Kobe Milk, and Pete Jr.; and numerous nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins, grandfathers, grandmothers, and grandchildren.

Alvin was preceded in death by parents Melvin Milk Sr. and Lorraine Cottier-Tallman; brother Beau Shaw; sister Kimmie Shaw; grandparents Oscar and Jenny (Randall) Milk; aunt Almanda (Milk) Douthit; and uncle Joe Milk Sr.
