Services for Gene Arthur McGannon, age 81, of Whitney, NE will be at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at 936 West 10th Street in Chadron, NE.
Gene passed away quietly on Sunday, October 21, 2018. He was born on September 28, 1937 to Andy and Ruth (Hebbert) McGannon. He married Beverly Seveland in 1958, and to this union came four children, Andy, Julie, Peggy and Ed.
Gene graduated from Chadron High School in 1956, Kearney State Teachers College with a BS in Education in 1961, and Colorado State University in Greeley, CO with a Master’s in Industrial Arts. He taught in Berthoud, CO for 10 years and then Crawford, NE for another 17 years. During that time he coached football, wrestling, and basketball.
Gene built houses in Berthoud and Estes Park, CO as well as Chadron, Crawford, Gordon and Whitney.
In 1984, Gene and Bev joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. A year later they were sealed together for eternity in the Salt Lake City, UT temple. They worked at the temple in Bismarck, ND for two years. Gene and Bev went to Cove Fort, UT for 18 months on a missionary assignment, meeting people and making memories for years to come. Gene was a stalwart member of the church, regularly volunteering for any assignment. The church honed and polished Gene.
But Gene’s greatest love was for his family. He taught them how to work and how to play.
Survivors include wife Bev; children Andy of Guernsey, WY, Julie (Fred) Raben of Whitney, NE, Peggy of Chadron, NE, and Edward of Centralia, WA; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; sisters Joyce Bernard of Chadron, NE and Donna Hunter of Benton, KY; brother Pat of Sterling, CO; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding him in death were parents Andy and Ruth McGannon, sister Barbara Dryden, and grandson Andrew (Drew) Black.
