12/15/2018 - Deborah Jealous of Him
Funeral services for Deborah Arlette Jealous of Him, age 57, will be at 1:00 PM on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at the Elderly Meals Building in Porcupine, SD with Pastor Christian Morgan of the Potter’s House in Rapid City, SD officiating. Traditional Lakota services will be provided by Mike Little Boy Sr. and Mike Little Boy Jr.
She will be laid to rest next to her mother in the Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Porcupine, SD.
Deborah unexpectedly passed away on December 3, 2018 in Eureka, CA. Born on December 1, 1961 in Pine Ridge, SD to Louis Jealous of Him and Bessie Rock Jealous of Him, Debbie has gone on to meet the Creator. A proud tribal member of the Oglala Lakota and a daughter, sister, aunt, mother, grandmother, and friend to many, she will be remembered and missed by all.
A natural beauty and kind soul with an adventurous spirit, Debbie leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, independence, indigenous rights activism, and tenacity for survival while enduring loss and illness.
Being raised on the Pine Ridge reservation, Debbie faced many hardships at a young age like many around her at that time. Through perseverance and a vision of a brighter future for indigenous youth, Debbie participated in activism as part of “AIM youth,” which advocated for anti-racism, Native American civil rights, and many more controversial issues during the 70s in which she was active. It was during this time in the 70s that Debbie found her first love and father to her beautiful twin daughters. Gary Prettybird, with his handsome smile and charm along with excellent horseman skills, caught the attention of Debbie, and although long separated, as Mr. Prettybird passed many years before her, they shared a special place in their hearts for each other. It can be assured they have reunited in the heavens and are smiling down on the beautiful life they have brought onto this earth.
Debbie spent the last 40 years of her life in Humboldt County. Finding a welcoming home on the Hoopa Valley reservation and birthing six more children with Glenn Jones Sr. The Jones family became Debbie’s family, and she was loved like a daughter and relative. So many memories have been made for her in Humboldt County, the good along with the bad, and it was a beautiful place to her in which she did not want to leave. Cruising the mountains with friends or cooling off in the Trinity River on a hot summer day or heading to the coast for some fresh Pacific Ocean breezes, Debbie was always looking to have a good time.
Debbie is survived by sisters Sharron Twiss-Clifford of Manderson, SD, Dianne Jealous of Him-Martinez of Rapid City, SD, Sheryl Jealous of Him of Ft. Worth, TX, and Amy Jealous of Him-Walters of Denver, CO; brothers Louis (Iggy) Jealous of Him II of Porcupine, SD, Waldron “Wally” Jealous of Him Sr. of Rapid City, SD, and Delno Jealous of Him of California; children Waunshila Jealous of Him, Hakekta Jealous of Him, Glenn Jones Jr., Veronica Jones, Tyrone Jones, Jeremiha Jones, Monique Clayton, Dakota Bailey, and Roman Jealous of Him; grandchildren Aiyana Cafferty, Chaske Carr, Feather Rakestraw, Adrian Funmaker, Mazakahomni Funmaker, Kimimila Funmaker, Jacoby Jones, Julian Jones, Samia Jones, Dyami Brooks, Aliyah Brooks, Lula Nunez, Benji Nunez, Jeremiah Jones Jr., and Izaiah Jones; special friend Glenn Jones Sr.; and many more friends and family members who loved and cared for her.
Debbie was preceded in death by mother Bessie Rock Jealous of Him; father Louie Jealous of Him; brother Jonathan Twiss Sr.; half-sister Sandra Jealous of Him; and half-brother Rodney Jealous of Him.
