Funeral services for Eleanor Mary Charging Crow “Oye Maza Winyan,” age 87, will be at 2:00 PM on Monday, January 7, 2019 at the Crazy Horse School in Wanblee, SD with Father Ron Seminara, S.J., officiating. Traditional Lakota services will be provided by Naca Charging Crow and Dallas Nelson. Special Speakers and Prayers Offered by Darla Black and Jerome High Horse. Drum Group will be the Red Elk Singers.
Burial will be at the Gethsemane Episcopal Cemetery in Wanblee, SD.
A two-night wake service will start at 1:30 PM on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at the Crazy Horse School in Wanblee, SD with evening services starting at 7:00 PM.
Eleanor was born in Hisle, SD on June 7, 1931 to Joseph Comes Out Holy-Two Sticks and Theresa (Hawkins) Comes Out Holy Two Sticks. She made her journey to the Spirit World on December 27, 2018 at Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, SD.
Eleanor married James Charging Crow on August 12, 1952.
Eleanor served on many boards for the Oglala Sioux Tribe, including the Credit Board, Personnel Board, O.S.L.H. Board, Public Safety Commission Board, Oglala Lakota College Board of Trustees, Health Board, Enrollment Board, Crazy Horse School Board, OSC Local Board, and the Local Health Board. She was very proud to be part of the Episcopal Church Women’s Group and being a foster parent for many children. Eleanor served on the Oglala Sioux Tribal Council from 1980 to 1984 and was an EMT from 1966 to 2018. She also worked at Headstart as an aide and cook, was part of the empowerment zone, and was a public notary.
Eleanor is survived by children Leo (Sandy) Bald Eagle, Rachel (Ray) Casuse, Theresa (Jerome) High Horse, Delbert (Barb) Charging Crow, James Lynn Charging Crow, Marilyn (Neil) Charging Crow, Lynette (Terry) Little Whiteman, and Joshua Charging Crow; grandchildren that she raised Denise Standing Bear, David Wilcox, Monica Fast Horse, Lisa Fast Horse, and Joey Comes; brother Joseph Comes; hunka sisters Julia Wilcox, Hanna Amiotte, Rhonda Two Eagle, Cindy Jones Lynn Gallego, Sandra Old Horse, Mary Felicia, Irma Maldonado, Melissa Tobacco, and Donna Solomon; and extended hunka family Melvin Young Bear, Ron Duke, Elroy Cross, Mike Ballenger, Adrian Fazio, Anthony Wounded head, Joshua Williams, Chris Burton, Jay Youngman, and John White Eyes, Kimberly Lee, Melody Barrow, Allen Arkima, Kate DeNoma, Mary, Tommi Young Bull Bear, Dodi Miller, Stephanie Swift Hawk, Tanya Dull Knife, Angie Between Lodges, Marty Stands, Becky Lewis, Annette Stands, John Yellow Bird Steele, Garfield Steele, Carlin Red Blanket, Algin Red Blanket, Rich Red Blanket, Sylvester Two Bulls, and Kelly Standing Elk.
Eleanor was preceded in death by husband James Charging Crow; parents Joseph Comes Out Holy Two Sticks and Theresa (Hawkins) Comes Out Holy Two Sticks; children Geraldine “Goldie” Charging Crow, Taylor Bald Eagle, Darlene Charging Crow, Floyd Charging Crow, and Eva Charging Crow; siblings Joseph Dean Comes, Pete Two Sticks, Clarence Comes, and Gladys Cottier; grandchildren Amanda Charging Crow, Tonya Fast Horse, Mark Andrew Pebeahsy, and Tamera Uses Arrow; great-grandchildren Tawni Wilcox, Ashton Standing Bear, Micah and Jaceya Cummings, Ella Lorraine Charging Crow, Matthew John Standing Bear, Sutton Wilcox, Zion Charging Crow, and Riley Rae Eisenbraun; and hunka family Abraham Tobacco, Gerald “Jump” Big Crow, and Elton White.
