01/05/2019 - Maurice 'Jerry' Champagne Jr.
Funeral services for Maurice “Jerry” Jerome Champagne Jr. “Casmu Hoksila” (Desert Sand Boy), age 56, will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at the Billy Mills Hall in Pine Ridge, SD with Marlin Hunt and Wayne Flood officiating.
Burial will be at Wolf Creek Community Cemetery in Wolf Creek, SD.
A one-night wake service will begin at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 4, 2019 at the Billy Mills Hall in Pine Ridge, SD with evening services starting at 7:00 PM.
Maurice was born on April 29, 1962 in Barstow, CA to Maurice J. Champagne Sr. and Irma Black Feather-Bad Wound. He made his journey to the Spirit World on December 25, 2018 at his home in Wolf Creek Housing.
Maurice was raised near the Mojave Desert in California. Maurice’s grandmother gave him his Lakota name, Casmu Hoksila-Desert Sand Boy. Maurice started Head Start in Dallas, TX and then moved to Camp LeJeune in North Carolina where his father was stationed. Maurice returned to Pine Ridge where he completed elementary school and junior high and then graduated high school in Rushville, NE.
Maurice’s accomplishments were too many; he was unique in his own way. He worked for five years in Ashland, MT at the lumber and numerous other places. We all loved him and will continue to love him even in his passing.
Maurice is survived by mother Irma Bad Wound; father Maurice Champagne Sr.; sister Maretta Champagne; brother James Pierre’ Champagne; aunt Mary Condon; daughter Lindsey Sullivan; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.
Maurice was preceded in death by brother Gilbert Bad Wound; grandparents James Black Feather, Jessie Yellow Boy-Black Feather, and Margaret Chosa-Roubideaux; aunts Stella Rowland and Martha Black Feather; and uncles Raymo Black Feather, Sylvester Black Feather, and John Black Feather.
