Funeral services for James Alan Conroy “Iha Inila Mani,” age 18, will be at 10:00 AM on Thursday, February 14, 2019 at the Batesland School Gymnasium in Batesland, SD with Father Edmund Yainao, S.J., and Sister Barb Bogenschutz officiating.
Burial will be at the Knight’s Cemetery in Batesland, SD.
A one-night wake service will begin at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at the Batesland School Gymnasium in Batesland, SD with Rosary services starting at 7:00 PM.
James was born on May 15, 2000 and passed away peacefully on February 7, 2019 at his home in Batesland, SD.
James was a 17-year-old senior at Red Cloud High School when he started getting sick in late July 2017 and progressively got worse by the month of August. James was taken to the ER several times due to headaches, nausea, and pain. On August 28, 2017, James had a CT Scan of his brain and was confirmed to have a tumor. He was immediately flown to Sanford Children’s Hospital ICU in Sioux Falls, SD, and his condition worsened by the day. While in Sioux Falls, James’ condition was confirmed as a Midline Giloma Astrocytoma High Grade with MK27 mutation and was inoperable. James’ left side of his body became compromised due to the tumor causing pressure on the right side of his brain. James started 42 days of chemotherapy pills and 33 days of radiation therapy; he was hospitalized for a total of 10 weeks with his mother by his side the entire time. James continued treatment and was back and forth to Sioux Falls all while continuing high school. James graduated from Red Cloud High School in 2018 while continuing his treatments.
James is survived by mother Josie Yellow Hair and father Ben Conroy of Batesland, SD; brothers Ben Conroy Jr. and Brandon Conroy of Batesland, SD; grandparents Audrey Yellow Hair, Alan Hanneman, and Bertha Conroy of Batesland, SD; uncles Darrell (Jen) Yellow Hair, Rex (Flo) Conroy, and Eric Conroy; and aunts Barbara (Mike) Yellow Hair, Nikki (John) Yellow Hair, Sophia (Craig) Conroy, Connie (Archie) Sierra, Rena Conroy, and Danielle Conroy.
James was preceded in death by grandfather Orville Conroy; uncles Will Yellow Hair, J.R. Conroy, and Theodore Yellow Hair; and great-grandparents Leo and Almarie Yellow Hair, Ben and Esther Conroy, and Steve and Rebecca Yellow Hair.
Pallbearers will be CJ Yankton, Reuben Harvey, Manuel Yellow Horse, Garrett L. Richards, Kane Farland, Jarren Crow, Russell Leader Charge, Marshall Gibbons, Louis Her Many Horses, Jeff Pourier, Ohitika Lewis, and Kobe Morrisette.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Red Cloud Class of 2018, Red Cloud School Staff and Students, Dr. Kailyn Wagner, Sanford Children’s Specialist Clinic Staff, Dr. Michelle Loehr, Sanford Cancer Care Staff, Ronald McDonald House of Sioux Falls Staff, Lifescape Rehabilitation Center of Sioux Falls Staff, Grace of the Pines Hospice Center Staff, Pine Ridge Medical Records Staff, Batesland School Staff and Students, and All Supporters, Friends, and Family during James’ journey.
