Funeral services for 79-year old Vicki Rae (Mahrt) DuBray-Hudson will be Tuesday, March 12, 2019, at 10:00 at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Rapid City, SD, with Father Chris Roussell and Pastor Woody Brien officiating.

Burial will follow at 11:30 AM, Tuesday at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD

A one-night wake service will be held Monday, March 11, 2019 at 3:00 at the Rim Rock Community Center at Johnson Landing near Rapid City, SD with evening services starting at 7:00 PM

Vicki Rae (Mahrt) DuBray-Hudson was born on July 31, 1939 in Pine Ridge, SD to Edwin Mahrt and Cynthia DuBray, and made her journey to the Spirit World on February 28, 2019 in Sioux City, IA.

She was the wife of Charles Eugene Hudson, they were married 63 years. She attended high school in Hot Springs, SD and attended Western Iowa Technical Institute and Morningside College in Sioux City, IA, earning her associate’s degree in Early Childhood.

Cheerleader, Majorette, Teacher, Wife and Mother, these are all words that describe mom.  Our mother was a Hot Springs Bison cheerleader. Throughout her life, her family was her team and her high school sweetheart of 63 years was her Varsity Captain.

Mom was ever present, cheering from the sidelines, no matter the weather or competition. We no longer hear her encouraging and supportive voice, her megaphone has fallen silent. Yet we know she is still cheering us to rally, to be strong, to pick up her pom poms and move forward.

Our mother was a Hot Springs Bison Majorette. Her sparkle, talent and wide smile was endearing to the crowd as she led the Bison Marching Band with her incredible twirling routines.

Throughout her life, our majorette mother also led the way for her family. She performed amazing routines for her children, modeling service to others, selflessness, generosity, honesty, undying loyalty and unconditional love.

Her baton no longer twirls, her boots no longer march. She taught us to lead and prepared us to pick up her baton and follow in her bootsteps.

Our mother was a beloved teacher at the Native American Preschool in Sioux City for many years. She had a soft heart for children and was a gifted teacher and child advocate in her community. Her many gifts and special ways imparted love and knowledge into her students. 

Our mother was also her family’s teacher. She instilled in her children her love for reading, painting, sculpting, decorating and Lakota culture. She taught us to dance, to appreciate music, care for the elderly, enjoy nature and love animals. Our teacher passed on an indelible legacy to her family, which in turn will be passed down for generations to come.

Vicki Rae was a charming, bright and studious Bisonette from Hot Springs who caught the eye of a fun loving Edgemont Mogul. He was a football player and she a cheerleader from rival towns. Soon that small town rivalry grew into a relationship that eventually became a fire.

The young couple married on the 24th of April,1956. He became her soldier husband and she his wife and loyal, life partner. Two young kids built a life and became incredible parents to their daughters. Vicki Rae was a loving wife and mother who enjoyed spending time with her husband and family.

Gene and Vicki raised their girls, traveled; both had careers and built a cabin where they spent their retirement. They started as two small town kids from Fall River County, enjoyed many happy years together, and eventually their hearts were one.

At 5:00 AM on the 28th of February, Vicki Rae called out Gene’s name, reached upwards and in his arms, drew her final breath. Gene will dearly miss his high school sweetheart, precious wife and soul mate. His Blue Star will be shining down on him until the day he calls her name and reaches up for her hand. 

Vicki Rae is survived by her husband Charles Eugene, three daughters: Gina Fiferman (Leslie), Colleen Flanders (Patrick), and Cynthia Maxfield (Jeffrey), five grandchildren: Shannon Fiferman, Davina Fiferman, Lonea Lange (Matthew), Levi Maxfield and Madeleine Flanders, nine great grandchildren: Alex, Kasey, Ella and Psiona Fiferman, Peyton, Dennon and Triston Parks, Zayden and Lena Lange, one great great grandchild, Damien Fiferman.

She is also survived by brothers: Art, Charles and Bobby Zimiga and Sam DuBray, sisters: Melissa Yellowboy, Hazel DuBray, Irene DuBray and Eula Young. Vicki Rae is also survived by her beloved puppy, Pesha.

Vicki Rae was predeceased by her parents, Edwin Mahrt and Cynthia DuBray Mahrt, brother, Martin Mahrt and sister Mary Jane Maynard.

Pallbearers will be Shannon Fiferman, Levi Maxfield, Jeffrey Maxfield, Patrick Flanders, Arri Zimiga, and Austin Zimiga.

Honorary pallbearers will be all her friends and relatives
