Funeral Services for Leroy Allen Broken Nose will be Wednesday, Oct 23, 2019 , at 2:00 pm at the Re-Creation Center in Oglala, SD, with Pastor Eric Sutton officiating and traditional Lakota services by Mr Richard Broken Nose

Burial Service will be at Broken Nose Family Cemetery in Oglala, SD

A two-night wake service starts Monday, Oct 21, 2019, at 3:00 PM at the Re-Creation Center in Oglala with evening prayers each night at 7:00.

Leroy Alan Broken Nose was born on October 24, 1953 in Batesland, SD to Ole Broken Nose and Dorothy (Young Dog) Broken Nose. Leroy made his journey to the Spirit World on October 13, 2019 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, SD.

Leroy attended Loneman School in Oglala and graduated from Todd County High School while boarding at the Bishop Hare. He then attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion and Oglala Lakota College to become a teacher.

Leroy taught elementary education at the Loneman School and high school math in Rushville, Ne, then took time off from teaching and traveled to Juneau, Alaska, where he spent 8 months working for the T.O. Paddock Co., a marine construction firm working on docks and bridges.

He enjoyed his time in Alaska where he made many life-long friends. He was approached by the director of the Juneau play “One Flew over the Cookoo’s Nest” and he asked LeRoy why he didn’t try out for the Indian’s role!  LeRoy said he was too shy. LeRoy was a quiet and reserved man with a sense of humor that will be long remembered.

LeRoy was a devoted uncle and grandfather to his many nieces and nephews and his sisters’ grandchildren. He was known as papa LeRoy. He loved his family and kept his home open to many friends and family. He loved and enjoyed his coffee and watching the Denver Broncos. The Broncos won their first game on the afternoon that LeRoy left this world.

He was a spiritual man and had bible studies at his house, but also honored and respected his Lakota traditional teachings. As a youth, LeRoy served as alter boy for many years at the St. Peter’s Church. His favorite time of the year was the Christmas Season.

LeRoy, his sisters, and families gathered weekly at each other’s home and enjoyed a family potluck, and played bingo to raise money for the many beloved children in his family. LeRoy enjoyed giving out a bag of Old Fashioned Christmas candy and nuts to family and friends on Christmas Day. LeRoy Nose (fondly nicknamed on Facebook) will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and those who knew him.

Leroy is survived by his sisters, Sara (Tom) Paddock of Juneau, AK, Jennie Briseno and Louella Broken Nose, both of Oglala, SD and Jewel (Hugh) Blacksmith of Pine Ridge, SD; special niece, Mesean Amelia Two Lance; nieces, Norma Two Lance, Mary Two Lance, Whitney He Crow, Evva Briseno, Joan His Law, Winola He Crow and Genell Lasarge; nephews, Brew Paddock, Ed Flute, Wilbur Flute, Mike and Shane Paddock, Joseph Briseno, Brandon Briseno, Isaac Two Lance, David He Crow and Dallas Two Lance; aunt, Goldie Eagle Louse; uncles, Richard Broken Nose and Nason Backs; special grandchildren, Brianna Briseno, Kash Two Lance, Autumn Briseno and Dotty Brave Heart; 50 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren.

Leroy was preceded in death by his father, Ole Broken Nose; mother, Dorothy (Young Dog) Broken Nose; sister, Norma Broken Nose-Lasarge; and grandparents, Basil Broken Nose, Rebecca Kills Close to Lodge, Oscar Young Dog and Jennie Sitting Bear..

Pallbearers will be Dewey “Tuffy” Brave Heart, Reuben Looks Twice, Sr., Reuben Looks Twice, Jr., Brianna Briseno, Hoksila Briseno, Brandon Briseno, Jr., Dallas Two Lance, David “Skinz” He Crow, Curtis Barrett, Mahpiya Briseno, Isaac Two Lance, Joseph Briseno, Hetehila Brave Heart and Edwin Flute.
