Funeral services for 65 year old Vernon Moves Camp are Sunday, Nov 24, 2019 at 2:00 at the Crazy Horse School in Wanblee, SD, with traditional Lakota services by Mr Sam Moves Camp
Graveside services will be at the Bear Creek Cemetery in Wanblee.
A two-night wake service starts Friday, Nov 22, at 3:00 at the Crazy Horse School in Wanblee, SD
Vernon Moves Camp was a veteran of the U-S Marine Corps and Sioux Funeral Home in Pine Ridge is in charge of his arrangements.
Vernon Moves Camp (Hehaka Piya Inájin) was born on August 18, 1954 in Ti Ska to James Moves Camp and Ellen (Winters) Moves Camp and passed away peacefully at his home in Oglala, with his wife by his side on November 16, 2019.
Vern woke up every day, with thanks to Tunkasila for this beautiful day. His loves include spending time with loved ones, family, and friends, fighting for the people by being a civil rights director for 20 plus years, and grass dancing. He enjoyed having long talks with his kolas and going to Prairie Wind Casino. Vern lived his life like the “Old Indian” with his heart as an akicita. Every day he fought until he finished his walk on Unci Maka.
Vernon is survived by his wife, Treena Moves Camp of Oglala, SD; brothers, Sam (Eileen) Moves Camp & Family of Wanblee, SD, Louis Moves Camp & Family of Hisle, SD, and Mike (Stephanie) Moves Camp & Family of Georgetown; sisters, Germaine Moves Camp & Family of Hisle, SD, Mona Moves Camp & Family of Sioux Falls, SD, and Bernadette Moves Camp & Family of Wanblee, SD; daughters, Amanda Wallat, Shylo Ghost, and Wojapi Moves Camp; grandchildren, Morning Star Morrison, Shannon Ghost, David Huckabee, Dalton Morrison, Devan Nays, Estallio Ghost, Tashiana Moves Camp, Abigail Montes, Shannon Ghost II, Aleksa Montes, Enrique Ghost, Nathaniel Red Willow, Jesus Meyer, Jessica Meyer, and Christopher Meyer; and great grandchildren, Aalliyah Huckabee, Gloria Moves Camp, Araiah Huckabee, Selena Ghost, Carter Flowers, Avaeh Morrison, Aylla Ghost, Maurice Ghost, Rosemary Flowers, David Huckabee, Jr., and Nicholas Ghost, and all other relatives.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, James and Ellen L. (Sitting Up-Winter) Moves Camp; grandparents, Samuel Moves Camp and Winnie Moves Camp; Leona Richards-Winters and Alexander Winters; daughter, Phoebe Morrison; son, Michael Ghost; brother, James Dean Moves Camp; sister, Pearl Dull Knife; and nephews, John Lynn Moves Camp and Tunka Moves Camp.
Pallbearers will be Cornell “Dutch” Conroy, Wayne High Hawk, Allen “Spud” Morin, Conway New Holy, Dalton Morrison, Estallio Ghost, Tracy “Ben” Smith, and Ken Youngman.
