Funeral Services for Bernadine Caroline Sanders Rockey, age 72, of Crawford will be Friday, February 8, 2008 at 2:30 PM at the United Methodist Church in Crawford with Pastor Marsha Stauss officiating. Burial will be at the Crawford Catholic Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the Heritage Health Care Center. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, P.O. Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337.
Bernadine Caroline Sanders was born on August 7, 1935 in Ewing, Nebraska. She graduated from Ewing High School in 1953 and later married Vernon Coe Rockey on November 18, 1954 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Ewing.
She supported her husband as they built a successful Optometry practice that started in Crawford and move to new locations in Chadron and Gordon. She also helped establish the Ft. Robinson stage coach, hay ride and cowboy cookout which was later acquired by the State of Nebraska.
She was affectionately known as Bernie to her family and friends. She is remembered for her tenacity for accomplishing whatever she set her hands to do, and she spoke often of having grown up in Ewing and living and working in the café her parents owned and operated. Her greatest accomplishment later in life was obtaining her Bachelors in Sociology from Chadron State College.
Immediate Survivors:
Son- Vernon Guy Rockey and wife Cori and their children Ryan and his wife Brook, Nicole and her husband Nathan, Devon and Kyle.
Daughters- Thoma Jean Taylor and her son Jesse and daughter Sara; Charmaine K. Crabb and her husband Tim and their sons Geoffrey, Ian and Eric; Shannon Cherice Kraus and her husband Peter and their children Lisel and Garrett; Artee Bea McCaskill and her children Austin and Payton.
Brothers- Pat and John Sanders.
Sister- Mary Engeretsen.
Great Grandchildren- 3
Chamberlain Chapel of Crawford is in charge of arrangements.
